Both Teams to Score Goals

Both teams to score goals explained: how BTTS bets work, the rules that catch people out, and 2025-26 BTTS rates for Europe's top five leagues and teams.

Fixture List: Today Fri, 30 Oct 2026 · WAT

Both teams scored in 56% of Premier League games last season, yet champions Arsenal hit BTTS in fewer than half of theirs. Here is how the market really works, what a full season of data from Europe’s top five leagues shows, and how to judge a BTTS pick.

Few football bets are as easy to understand as both teams to score. You do not need to pick a winner or guess the exact score. You only need to answer one question: will each team find the net at least once? That simplicity has made it one of the most popular markets with bookmakers around the world.

Simple does not mean random, though. Some leagues produce BTTS far more often than others, some teams almost always concede and score, and a few rules regularly catch bettors out. Understanding those details is the difference between following a habit and making an informed choice.

This guide explains what both teams to score means and how it is settled. It then uses complete 2025-26 results from the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 to show how often BTTS really happens, which teams lead the way, how to estimate the chance yourself and what to check before backing it.

What Does Both Teams to Score Mean?

Both teams to score, usually shortened to BTTS and sometimes called “goal/goal” or “GG/NG”, is a bet on whether each side scores at least one goal. You choose Yes if you think both teams will score, or No if you think at least one team will fail to score.

The winner does not matter. A 1-1 draw, a 2-1 home win and a 4-3 away win are all BTTS Yes. A 3-0 win, a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw are all BTTS No. Because there are only two outcomes, the odds for each side are often quite close, typically somewhere around even money for an average game.

BTTS Rules That Catch Bettors Out

  • Only 90 minutes count. BTTS is settled on normal time plus stoppage time. Goals in extra time and penalty shootouts do not count, so a cup tie that is 0-0 after 90 minutes settles as BTTS No, even if both teams score in extra time.
  • Own goals usually count. BTTS is normally settled on the official scoreline, so an own goal counts for the team it is credited to. This is different from goalscorer bets, where own goals usually do not count.
  • Abandoned matches. If a game is abandoned before the end, bets are often made void unless the result was already decided. Rules differ between bookmakers, so check the terms.
  • Combined markets need everything to happen. In “BTTS and win” or “BTTS and over 2.5 goals”, both parts must land. A 1-0 win for your team loses a BTTS and win bet.

How Often Do Both Teams Score? 2025-26 Data

To find out, we analysed the full 2025-26 results of Europe’s top five leagues, 1,751 matches in total (one Ligue 1 game is missing from the dataset). The totals match the official goal counts, including the Premier League’s 1,045 goals at 2.75 per game.

League (2025-26) BTTS Yes Goals per game 0-0 draws
Bundesliga 61.8% (189 of 306) 3.24 3.9%
La Liga 56.6% (215 of 380) 2.69 3.9%
Premier League 56.1% (213 of 380) 2.75 7.1%
Ligue 1 50.8% (155 of 305) 2.83 7.5%
Serie A 45.3% (172 of 380) 2.43 9.5%

Germany was the clear leader, with both teams scoring in almost two games out of three. Serie A sat at the other end. Fewer than half of Italian games produced BTTS, almost one in ten finished 0-0 and the most common score line was 1-0.

La Liga is the interesting case. It scored fewer goals per game than Ligue 1 or the Premier League, yet had a higher BTTS rate. Spanish games were more often low and level, with 1-1 the most common result in 58 matches. This shows that BTTS depends on how goals are shared, not only on how many are scored.

In England, BTTS has stayed fairly stable. It landed in 57% of Premier League games in 2024-25 and 56.1% in 2025-26. In the first five rounds of 2026-27, it hit in 25 of 50 matches, exactly 50%, during a spell when Opta Analyst recorded the highest share of draws in Premier League history.

The Score Line That Decides Most BTTS Bets

The most common result in the 2025-26 Premier League was 1-1, which happened 47 times, or in 12.4% of all matches. It was followed by 2-1 (37 matches) and 0-1 (31). That pattern matters for anyone combining markets.

A 1-1 draw is the only BTTS Yes result with fewer than three goals. That means 47 of the season’s 213 BTTS games, about 22%, would have lost a “BTTS and over 2.5 goals” bet. Overall, BTTS and over 2.5 goals together landed in 43.7% of Premier League games, compared with 56.1% for BTTS alone.

Which Teams Are Best and Worst for BTTS?

In the Premier League, Manchester United were the top BTTS team in 2025-26, with both sides scoring in 27 of their 38 games (71%). Liverpool followed with 26. At the other end, Wolves (17) and Sunderland (18) had the fewest BTTS games, often because they failed to score.

Strong defences also lower the rate. Champions Arsenal had BTTS in only 18 of 38 league games (47%), and Manchester City in 19. Title-winning sides tend to keep many clean sheets, which is why backing BTTS on the best teams can be riskier than it looks.

League Highest BTTS team Lowest BTTS team
Premier League Man United, 27 of 38 (71%) Wolves, 17 of 38 (45%)
Bundesliga Köln, 27 of 34 (79%) Gladbach, 14 of 34 (41%)
La Liga Real Sociedad, 30 of 38 (79%) Getafe, 11 of 38 (29%)
Serie A Fiorentina, 22 of 38 (58%) Lazio, 11 of 38 (29%)
Ligue 1 Monaco and Strasbourg, 22 of 34 (65%) Lille, 13 of 34 (38%)

How to Estimate the Chance of BTTS Yourself

A simple way to estimate BTTS is to multiply the chance of each team scoring. In the 2025-26 Premier League, home teams scored in 77.4% of games and away teams in 71.6%. Multiplying the two (0.774 × 0.716) gives 55.4%, very close to the real BTTS rate of 56.1%.

You can apply the same idea to a single match. If you think the home side has an 80% chance of scoring and the away side 65%, your estimate is 0.80 × 0.65, or 52%. Then compare it with the odds. To turn decimal odds into a percentage, divide 1 by the price: BTTS Yes at 1.80 suggests about 55.6%. If your estimate is lower, the bet is not good value.

Popular BTTS Variations

Market What must happen 2025-26 Premier League rate
BTTS Yes Both teams score in 90 minutes 56.1%
BTTS and over 2.5 goals Both score and three or more goals 43.7%
BTTS in the first half Both score before half-time 17.4%
BTTS in both halves Both score in each half 6.1%
BTTS and win Both score and your team wins Depends on team

The harder the condition, the bigger the odds, but the chance falls quickly. Both teams scored in each half of only 23 Premier League games all season, roughly one match in sixteen.

What to Check Before Backing BTTS

  • Scoring and clean-sheet records. Look at how often each team fails to score and how often they keep clean sheets, home and away separately.
  • Expected goals (xG). xG measures chance quality. A team that creates good chances but keeps missing is still likely to score soon.
  • Team news. A missing striker or first-choice goalkeeper can change the picture completely.
  • Match context. Knockout ties and games where a draw suits both sides are often tighter. A team chasing a result will take more risks.
  • League profile. A 56% BTTS rate in England is not the same as 45% in Italy, so adjust your expectations to the competition.

BTTS is easy to understand, but it is still a bet, and even well-researched picks lose often. Set a budget before you start, use only licensed bookmakers and never try to win back losses.

Two Teams, One Goal Each, Many Variables

Both teams to score asks a simple question, but the answer depends on defences as much as attacks, on the league as much as the teams, and on how goals are shared rather than how many arrive. The 2025-26 numbers show a market that hits a little over half the time in most top leagues, with big differences between Germany and Italy and between leaky teams and champions. Knowing those patterns will not guarantee a winning bet, but it will stop you treating BTTS as a coin toss.
