MANCHESTER, June 30, 2026. Manchester United remain confident that goalkeeper Dermot Mee will commit his future to the club, even as his current deal expires at the stroke of midnight. The 23 year old is set to become a free agent from tomorrow, yet the expectation at Old Trafford is that he will put pen to paper on a new contract offer .

The Northern Ireland Under 21 international, who joined United from Walsall at the age of 16, has carved out a distinctive role within the squad. While his competitive experience remains limited comprising just four National League appearances for Altrincham during a loan spell early in the 2022/23 season, Mee has established himself as a valued presence in first team training .

The training ground presence

United’s decision to offer fresh terms underscores the importance they place on squad cohesion beyond matchday selection. When announcing the contract proposal earlier this month, the club emphasised that “the academy graduate has played an important role in first team training in recent years, whilst representing United’s Under 21s side in competitive fixtures” .

Mee has made 27 appearances for the Under 21s and was an unused substitute on five occasions during the 2024/25 season . Should he sign, he is expected to remain fourth choice goalkeeper, continuing to train and travel with the first team squad.

Goalkeeping overhaul

The Mee situation is unfolding against a backdrop of significant change in United’s goalkeeping department. Tom Heaton has signed a new deal to retain his place as third choice, while Senne Lammens has established himself as the undisputed No.1 following his arrival .

Andre Onana is set for another loan spell at Trabzonspor, while Altay Bayindir is also expected to depart this summer, leaving United actively pursuing a new back up goalkeeper to reinforce the position .
