LEEDS, June 24 Leeds United have moved into pole position to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles after Manchester United stepped back from the race, with Daniel Farke’s side now pushing to secure the 21 year old before the start of pre season.

The Elland Road club have already seen a £20 million offer rejected by the Saints, but they remain confident of reaching an agreement after learning that Charles is keen on a move to West Yorkshire. Manchester United had been monitoring the midfielder, with sporting director Jason Wilcox a long term admirer, but the Red Devils have decided not to pursue the deal after receiving indications that Charles favours Leeds.

According to the Daily Mail, United have accepted that the player’s preference is for a move to Elland Road, leaving Leeds in a strong position to finalise the transfer. Southampton had hoped to spark a bidding war but may now be forced to negotiate with only one serious suitor.

Leeds have also held discussions with winger Harry Wilson, with a lucrative offer already placed on the table. The club are working on several deals simultaneously as Farke seeks to strengthen a squad that showed promise last season.

The inflated midfielder market has complicated negotiations. Under normal circumstances, a £20 million offer for a player entering the final year of his contract at a Championship club would be considered strong. This summer, however, clubs are paying premium prices across the board, with West Ham reportedly holding out for £85 million for Mateus Fernandes despite relegation.

Southampton are well aware of the market conditions and appear reluctant to lower their demands for Charles, whose valuation has risen despite the Saints missing out on promotion. Leeds may be forced to increase their offer, but with Manchester United out of the running and the player’s preference clear, they remain in a strong position to complete the deal. Pre season is approaching quickly, and Farke will want his squad assembled before the campaign begins. Charles is now the priority, and Leeds are determined to get their man.
