William Saliba is continuing his recovery from a back injury, with the Arsenal defender now understood to be targeting a return later in October.
The France international has not played for Arsenal this season after carrying the problem through the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The injury became more serious during France’s semi-final against Spain, forcing Saliba off after he had been managing the issue during the tournament.
Arsenal confirmed in July that Saliba would require a period of rehabilitation but would not need surgery. The club said his recovery would be carefully managed following specialist assessments.
Saliba Making Progress
Mikel Arteta has remained cautious when discussing the defender’s recovery, avoiding a firm return date while the medical team monitors how his back responds as his workload increases.
Earlier this month, the Arsenal manager said Saliba’s progression had been positive but stressed that the club needed to respect the healing process before determining when he could return to competitive action.
The latest reports indicate that Arsenal are now working towards a return in late October. That would mean Saliba is unlikely to feature immediately when the Premier League resumes against Leeds United on October 10, but he could come back into contention later in the month if his rehabilitation continues without complications.
The timeline remains a target rather than a confirmed comeback date.
Arsenal Have Managed Without Him
Saliba’s absence has been significant for Arsenal, particularly because he has established himself as a key part of the central defensive partnership alongside Gabriel.
The Gunners began the campaign strongly despite his absence, winning their opening four Premier League matches before suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Brighton on September 19. Arsenal had also opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory at Napoli.
The defensive situation has also influenced Arsenal’s squad planning. The club signed Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a reported £51 million deal during the summer, adding another experienced option at centre-back while Saliba and other defenders dealt with fitness problems.
Konsa has therefore provided Arteta with another option alongside Gabriel while Saliba remains unavailable.
Return Could Strengthen Arsenal’s Defence
Saliba’s eventual return will give Arteta another established option as Arsenal approach a demanding period involving Premier League and European fixtures.
The Frenchman was included in Arsenal’s Champions League squad, an indication that the club expected him to return during the league phase rather than remain sidelined for the entire campaign.
For now, Arsenal’s priority is to complete Saliba’s rehabilitation without rushing the process. If his recovery continues as planned, the 25-year-old could be back in contention before the end of October, providing a major addition to Arteta’s defensive options for the second part of the autumn schedule.
