MANCHESTER, June 26, Brian Brobbey’s sparkling form at the World Cup has placed the Sunderland striker firmly on Manchester United’s radar, but a £50 million move would represent a gamble the club can ill afford as they prioritise reinforcements elsewhere.

The Netherlands international scored his third goal of the tournament in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Tunisia, having earlier netted a brace in the 5-1 thrashing of Sweden. His performances in North America have inevitably attracted attention, with United among several clubs reportedly monitoring the 23 year old .

Yet for all Brobbey’s promise, United’s summer priorities lie in different areas. The club have already agreed a £35 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with add ons taking the package to nearly £39 million, and remain in pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who carries an £85 million price tag .

Priorities lie elsewhere
United’s recruitment last summer, which brought Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford, addressed the forward line emphatically. Sesko finished the campaign strongly, while Cunha’s prolific form through the middle for Brazil has underlined the depth United already possess in attacking areas .

Brobbey’s debut Premier League season was encouraging, eight goals across all competitions, seven in the league but the Dutchman’s £50 million valuation demands scrutiny. For a club that spent heavily on forwards less than 12 months ago, allocating such a sum to another striker would represent questionable resource allocation .

Defensive and midfield needs more pressing
United’s return to the Champions League brings with it the requirement for a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. Manager Michael Carrick, who led the club to a third place finish last season, has identified midfield as the priority area for reinforcement .

With Fernandes the primary target and Ederson already secured, the defensive department also requires attention. The club have been linked with several full backs this summer, and the need for cover at centre back has not diminished following the departures of Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala .

The heavy investment in Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo last summer, a combined outlay exceeding £140 million, means further forward acquisitions would be a luxury United can scarcely afford, particularly given the financial constraints imposed by UEFA’s profitability and sustainability regulations .

Smart recruitment required
Brobbey may be scoring freely in North America, but United cannot afford to be seduced by tournament form. The club’s recruitment strategy under the new ownership structure has emphasised value and necessity, principles that would be undermined by a £50 million move for a striker who would compete with established options for a starting berth .

The lesson from last summer’s success is clear: United must recruit smartly, targeting areas of genuine need rather than being swayed by fleeting form. Brobbey’s World Cup exploits are commendable, but they should not distract from the club’s more pressing requirements. Anything less would risk repeating the errors of previous windows and Carrick’s promising project cannot afford that misstep .
