LONDON. Tottenham Hotspur have moved to the front of the queue for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, adopting an aggressive financial approach that has left Manchester United scrambling to keep pace in one of the summer’s defining transfer sagas.
The Portugal international, who enjoyed a superb campaign despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, is expected to depart the London Stadium this summer, with the Hammers demanding a substantial fee for their prized asset. Fernandes’ performances have attracted interest from across Europe, but it is the north London derby rivals who are now locked in a battle for his signature.
United’s need for midfield reinforcement is acute following Casemiro’s departure, while Spurs are seeking a replacement for Yves Bissouma, who has left at the end of his contract. Both clubs have identified the 22 year old as a primary target, but according to the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan, it is Tottenham who are currently leading the race.
Spurs’ aggressive approach
Speaking on The United Stand, Keegan revealed that Spurs have surprised their Premier League rivals with the scale of their ambition in the transfer market.
“There is the situation with Fernandes at West Ham, who they really like,” Keegan said. “What I’ve heard recently is Spurs have come in, and they have been really aggressive with the amount of money they are willing to spend. I don’t know if that’s nearly getting relegated frightening the life out of them. They have a manager now who is really forthright, who will look to get his own way.”
The appointment of Ange Postecoglou, who kept Spurs in the Premier League following a dramatic survival campaign, appears to have emboldened the club’s recruitment strategy. Keegan suggested the Australian manager had secured assurances of backing as part of his agreement to take the job.
“Maybe what we are seeing now is ‘I’ll keep you in the Premier League, but you’ve got to back me in the summer’,” he added.
United’s price ceiling
Crucially, Keegan indicated that Tottenham’s offer is already approaching the upper limit of what United are prepared to pay for Fernandes. While there remains a belief that the player favours a move to Old Trafford, the financial disparity may prove decisive.
“My information is that Spurs are already at the higher end of what United are happy to pay for him,” Keegan said. “There is still a belief that he wants to come and play for United, but you know as well as I do, it’s not just players, there are agents involved, and it tends to be that the player goes to whoever is offering the most money.”
Tonali alternative
The defining aspect of Spurs’ pursuit is their prior attempt to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. A £75 million bid for the Italian was rejected, with the Magpies holding out for £80/90 million. For Tottenham, offering a similar sum for Fernandes who is valued at a comparable level, represents a logical alternative.
West Ham are reportedly demanding at least £70 million for their midfield talisman, with United’s interest likely to inflate the price further. Tottenham’s willingness to meet that valuation could prove decisive, particularly if United adhere to a stricter financial ceiling.
For Fernandes, the decision may ultimately come down to where his ambitions lie. But with agents and financial packages now part of the equation, the race is far from over. What is clear is that Tottenham’s aggressive posture has shifted the dynamics of one of the summer’s most compelling transfer battles.
