ZENICA, Bosnia and Herzegovina – Group H leaders Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria will put their perfect World Cup qualifying records on the line Tuesday in a top-of-the-table clash that could prove decisive in the race for automatic qualification.

Both sides enter the match at Bilino Polje Stadium with maximum points – Bosnia having won all four of their qualifiers and Austria all three. The hosts are riding a wave of momentum following Saturday’s 6-0 demolition of San Marino, while Austria edged Cyprus 1-0 to maintain their own flawless start.

The match represents a significant test for Bosnia manager Sergej Barbarez, whose team failed to win any of his first eight matches in charge before their current qualifying surge. Veteran striker Edin Džeko, who scored twice against San Marino and netted the winner in Bosnia’s last home meeting with Austria in 2018, will lead the line for the hosts.

Austria, under Ralf Rangnick, have won six of their last nine matches and are considered slight favorites to top the group. Their organized pressing system and efficiency in front of goal – they’ve scored first in all three qualifiers – presents Bosnia’s most formidable challenge to date.

Historical trends suggest a tight contest: three of the last five meetings between the sides have ended level, with each team recording one victory. Bosnia will be bolstered by their impressive defensive record – six of their last eight wins have featured clean sheets – while Austria will miss suspended defender Stefan Posch.

The outcome could significantly shape the group landscape, with a Bosnia victory opening a six-point gap over their rivals. For Austria, who haven’t qualified for a World Cup since 1998, avoiding the playoffs remains the priority as they seek to capitalize on their impressive form under Rangnick.
