Barcelona have cooled their interest in AC Milan speedster Rafael Leao after identifying a major weakness in his game, his work rate without the ball just does not fit Hansi Flick’s system.
The Portuguese winger has been closely monitored by Barca’s scouting team for months. Club officials have attended multiple matches to assess him. On the ball? No problem. Pace, power, the ability to break defensive lines, he has all of it.
But football is not just about what you do with the ball. It is also about what you do without it. And that is where Leao falls short.
‘Not meeting the standards’
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s current tactical direction under Flick places heavy emphasis on pressing, defensive work rate and positional discipline from wide players.
Leao? His intensity in defensive transitions and consistency in pressing opponents is not where it needs to be.
In a setup where wingers are expected to contribute heavily both offensively and defensively, that is a decisive factor. You cannot hide. You cannot take plays off. You have to work.
Leao, for all his talent, has never been known for his defensive diligence.
Offered to Barca but not a priority
Despite the growing links, Leao is not being treated as a priority target. In fact, he has been offered to Barcelona in recent weeks. Milan reportedly value him at around €50m. The player is open to a move to Spain.
On paper, it looks realistic.
But Barcelona’s internal evaluation is leaning in a different direction. President Joan Laporta appreciates Leao’s attacking qualities. The sporting department is placing more weight on tactical fit and long term balance.
Right now, Leao is viewed as an alternative not a priority.
What Barca want
Flick’s system demands wingers who press. Who track back. Who maintain positional discipline even when they are tired.
Leao is not that player. He is a moments player. A highlight reel player. Spectacular in transition, but often anonymous when his team does not have the ball.
Barcelona are continuing to explore the market for wingers who fit their current demands. Leao, for all his talent, is not one of them.
The bottom line
Leao is a brilliant footballer on his day. But his day does not come often enough. And when it does not, he offers very little.
Barcelona have recognised that. And they have decided to look elsewhere.
€50m is not a fortune for a player of his talent. But it is still a significant investment. And Barca are not willing to make it for someone who does not fit the system.
Leao remains at Milan for now. But the Portuguese winger will need to adapt his game if he ever wants to play for a top club that demands defensive responsibility.
