MONTERREY, June 30, 2026. Morocco produced a stirring comeback to defeat the Netherlands on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw following extra time, booking their place in the World Cup round of 16 at the expense of the Dutch.
Cody Gakpo’s second half opener looked set to send the Netherlands through before Issa Diop headed home deep into stoppage time, forcing an additional 30 minutes that ultimately proved decisive. The Atlas Lions’ goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made the crucial save to deny Crysencio Summerville from the spot before Ismael Saibari blasted home the winning penalty to seal a 3-2 shootout victory .
The result sends Morocco into a last 16 clash with Canada in Houston on Saturday, while the Netherlands head home after a campaign that promised much but ultimately delivered heartbreak.
Gakpo’s emotional opener
The Netherlands had taken the lead midway through the second half through Gakpo, who scored just days after his partner confirmed the death of their unborn son . The Liverpool forward sank to the turf and appeared overcome with emotion as he was surrounded by teammates in a prolonged group embrace, his sixth World Cup goal moving him to second in the Netherlands’ all time scoring charts behind only Johnny Rep .
But Morocco refused to relent. Diop, unmarked at the far post, glanced home substitute Chemsdine Talbi’s cross in the first minute of stoppage time to force extra time and send the Moroccan contingent inside the stadium into raptures.
A fractious encounter
The match had been a fiercely contested affair from the outset, with Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio repeatedly called upon to intervene. Morocco created the better chances in normal time, with Neil al Aynaoui denied by a superb reflex save from Bart Verbruggen after meeting Achraf Hakimi’s corner .
Verbruggen was pressed into action moments later, tipping over a vicious strike from Hakimi, while Saibari was fortunate to escape sanction after elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke in the face midway through the half .
The Dutch, marshalled superbly by Virgil van Dijk, enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to convert it into clear cut chances. Their best effort before the break came when Micky van de Ven unleashed a ferocious shot from the edge of the area that Bounou tipped over .
Extra time drama
Ronald Koeman’s introduction of Wout Weghorst after the hydration break appeared to tilt the game in the Netherlands’ favour, with the big striker flicking on a long ball to release Summerville, who crossed for Gakpo to score .
But Diop’s late intervention forced extra time, where Morocco came close to winning it when Soufiane Rahimi went through on goal in the 96th minute, only to be denied by a jaw dropping save from Verbruggen . The Dutch held on for penalties, but despite El Aynaoui hitting the bar with Morocco’s first spot kick, the Atlas Lions recovered to claim a famous victory.
