Former Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri has revealed his regret over departing Chelsea.

Remember that the Italian strategist claimed the Europa League in his lone season managing the Blues before moving to Juventus.

In a discussion with The Sun, Sarri mentioned that staying at Stamford Bridge might have been the smarter choice.

“I could have remained at Chelsea.

“I wanted to return to Italy because the environment at Chelsea was complicated. At that time, Abramovich couldn’t visit England. I only saw him at matches overseas. We had a few phone calls but not too frequently.

“My main point of contact was Marina. There wasn’t a director of football, so things were a bit unclear. That’s why I decided to go back to Italy, but it turned out to be a misjudgment.

“It probably would have been wiser to remain there. I was slightly anxious about Chelsea’s situation and the uncertainties within the club. It wasn’t straightforward.

“I asked Marina if going back to Italy was feasible, and she requested compensation from Juventus to release me.

“They assured me I could stay at Chelsea if I wanted. However, by the end of the season with Chelsea, it was a positive experience and brought good achievements.

“We finished third in the Premier League standings, made it to the Carabao Cup final, and secured the Europa League. We delivered many excellent performances.

“Of course, there were moments of disaster, like at Manchester against City or the Bournemouth game.

“Now I am prepared to begin again. I’m uncertain where that might be right now. But my staff and I are ready.”
