Anthony Gordon is seeking a new challenge outside of England. That’s the breakthrough Bayern Munich have been waiting for.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the Newcastle United attacker is set to leave St James’ Park this summer and his priority is a move abroad. Not Chelsea. Not Liverpool. Not Arsenal. Somewhere new. Somewhere different.
That plays directly into Bayern’s hands.
The standoff over the fee
Here’s the problem. Newcastle are expected to take a hardline stance. They want a big fee. Bayern, traditionally, do not overpay.
Gordon is 25. He’s English. He’s got years left on his deal. The Magpies have every right to demand top dollar.
But if Gordon only wants Bayern? That changes everything.
Howe has already hinted
Eddie Howe has already implied that Gordon could have one eye on the summer window. Nothing public from the player or his agent but the signs are there.
If it becomes clear that Gordon’s heart is set on Munich, Newcastle will face an awkward choice. Keep an unhappy player, or sell for less than they want.
That’s when things get interesting.
The Bayern advantage
Bayern have been early movers on Gordon. They’ve got Harry Kane in his ear, telling him how good life is in Germany. And now they’ve got the player’s apparent preference for a move abroad.
Chelsea have resources. Arsenal and Liverpool have domestic appeal. But if Gordon wants out of England entirely, those clubs are suddenly less relevant.
Bayern are the natural destination.
What happens next
Newcastle will hold firm initially. They always do. But if Gordon pushes, really pushes the dynamic shifts.
A compromise fee. Add ons. A deal structured in Bayern’s favour. That’s the most likely outcome.
Gordon is ready to leave. He wants a new challenge. And Bayern are right there, waiting.
Now it’s down to the negotiations. And whether Newcastle blink first.
