Bruno’s BACK? Huge Injury Boost as Howe Faces Midfield Call for Bournemouth Clash

Newcastle have been handed a massive lift ahead of Bournemouth’s visit to St James’ Park, with Bruno Guimaraes closing in on a return after weeks of injury hell.

The Brazilian hasn’t kicked a ball since February. First it was his hamstring. Then, as if that wasn’t bad enough, mumps decided to gatecrash the party. It has been a nightmare spell for the Magpies skipper, and his absence has showed the midfield has lacked authority, the rhythm has been off, and the results have suffered.

But finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

‘He is desperate to help’

Eddie Howe, speaking ahead of the weekend, tried to keep a lid on expectations but could not hide his optimism.

“There is a chance he can be fit for the weekend,” the Newcastle boss said. “We have seen him in training, he is pushing hard to be involved, he is desperate to help the team, desperate to be involved.

“So, there is a possibility. I will make a decision off the back of training today.”

That is classic Howe, cautious, measured, refusing to get carried away. But make no mistake, having Guimarares back in the building has lifted the mood on Tyneside.

Whether he starts against Bournemouth is another matter entirely.

Midfield options mean no need to rush

With Lewis Miley, Sandro Tonali and Jacob Ramsey all available, Howe has the luxury of not throwing his captain straight back into the firing line. A place on the bench feels more likely, a 20 minute cameo to shake off the rust before the run in.

Joelinton’s suspension forces at least one change in the middle. That could open the door for someone else to stake a claim.

Selection headaches everywhere

The defeat to Crystal Palace has ramped up the pressure. Changes are coming.

William Osula looks set to lead the line. Kieran Trippier is pushing hard for a return at right back. Anthony Elanga and Dan Burn are also in contention as Howe searches for the right balance against a Bournemouth side who will punish any sloppiness.

Defensively, options are thin. Fabian Schar is out until May after foot surgery. Emil Krafth’s season is effectively over following a knee operation. Beyond that, Newcastle are relatively intact but the backline has looked shaky, and Bournemouth will test it.

The bigger picture

Another setback here and the questions around Howe’s direction will only get louder. Newcastle need points. They need performance. They need their leaders back.

Guimaraes is the heartbeat of this side. His return even from the bench could be the spark that gets this season back on track.

Bournemouth arrive on Tyneside knowing a wounded animal is dangerous. St James’ Park will be rocking. And if Bruno gets on that pitch, expect fireworks.
