Atlético Madrid are reportedly open to sanctioning the departure of Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman just months after bringing him to Spain in one of the club’s biggest winter deals of 2026, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28 year old joined Diego Simeone’s side from Atalanta in February in a transfer worth around €35m, with another €5m in possible add ons. He signed a long term contract until June 2030 and arrived with huge expectations after becoming one of the most dangerous attacking players in Serie A.

However, reports in Spain and Turkey now suggest Atlético are prepared to listen to offers for the Super Eagles star this summer. Simeone is believed to have approved the decision as Atlético continue plans for a wider squad rebuild.

Tactical struggles in Simeone’s system

Lookman’s difficulties have reportedly been linked to tactical issues inside Simeone’s demanding defensive structure. The former Everton and Leicester winger is known for his direct dribbling, freedom in attack and quick transitions but he has found life more difficult under Atlético’s rigid system.

Despite those concerns, Lookman still produced important moments. He scored four La Liga goals and also found the net in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Atlético now value the Nigerian at around €60m as they look to recover funds quickly.

Premier League clubs monitoring

Lookman’s uncertain future will attract attention across Europe, especially in England where he previously played for Charlton, Everton, Fulham and Leicester.

Arsenal are keeping a close eye. Mikel Arteta admires Lookman’s versatility, capable of playing on either flank or through the middle.

Liverpool are also linked. The Reds have monitored him since his Atalanta days and believe his aggressive pressing style and pace would suit their system.

Manchester United are watching closely too. United want more reliable goals from wide positions, and Lookman’s record in major European matches including his famous Europa League final hat trick for Atalanta continues to strengthen his reputation.

The financial picture

One major factor in any potential transfer is Lookman’s salary. He earns around €6m net per season around £200,000 per week before tax deductions.

Manchester United could comfortably absorb those wages. Liverpool’s structure is traditionally stricter unless the player is considered a guaranteed starter. Arsenal would also need to carefully balance their wage system.

Paris Saint Germain would face fewer financial difficulties. Fenerbahçe who nearly signed him before Atlético hijacked the move could use Turkey’s favourable tax structure.

The bottom line

Atlético want €60m. Lookman wants game time. The Premier League trio want attacking reinforcements.

He struggled in Simeone’s system. He thrived in Italy. Could England be the answer?

Arsenal, Liverpool and United are watching. PSG and Fenerbahçe are lurking.

The summer window hasn’t even opened, but Lookman’s name is already one to watch.
