BIRMINGHAM. Aston Villa have stepped up their pursuit of Flamengo right back Emerson Royal as Unai Emery looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to Brazilian journalist Vene Casagrande, the Europa League winners are in the decisive stages of negotiations with the Rio de Janeiro club, with talks advancing on a deal worth approximately R$55 million (€9 million). Flamengo are said to be “seriously considering” the proposal, and an agreement could be completed “at any moment” .
The 27 year old Brazilian has revived his career since returning to his homeland following mixed spells in Europe with Real Betis, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan. He has been impressive in the 2026 season, providing four assists in 21 appearances across all competitions while accumulating over 1,500 minutes of game time .
Emerson joined Flamengo from Milan in July 2025 in a deal worth €9 million, signing a contract until December 2028. His performances have stimulated interest from several well known clubs, with Villa emerging as the most serious suitor .
Squad restructuring drives pursuit
Villa’s interest in Emerson is understood to be driven by the potential departure of Andres Garcia, with the Spaniard reportedly seeking a move after becoming a peripheral figure under Emery. Garcia’s exit would leave Matty Cash as the only specialist right back in the squad, with Ezri Konsa having been used only as a makeshift option.
Emery has been clear about his desire to strengthen in that position, with several candidates including Oscar Mingueza having been linked. However, Emerson has now emerged as the primary target, and Villa are pushing to secure his signature .
Premier League return on the cards
Emerson previously spent three seasons in the Premier League with Tottenham, making 84 appearances and scoring three goals between 2021 and 2024. His time in north London was marked by inconsistency, and he was never quite able to command a regular starting berth under Antonio Conte or his successors .
A return to English football would represent a chance to prove himself after a career that has also included stints at Barcelona and AC Milan. For Villa, the move carries a degree of risk given his struggles at Spurs, but the Brazilian has rebuilt his confidence and form in Brazil, and the club appear confident he can make an impact.
Flamengo are currently balancing their financial books and have already raised €10 million by selling young striker Ryan Roberto to Shakhtar Donetsk this summer . The club are understood to be open to accepting Villa’s offer, and a deal could be finalised in the coming days.
