Manchester United have been given plenty to think about during the international break. Two midfield targets. Two very different situations.

Elliot Anderson has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his future. Sandro Tonali’s camp are already talking about a summer exit. And for Michael Carrick, the picture is getting clearer by the day.

United are flying right now. Six points clear of Liverpool in fifth. Champions League football is there for the taking. And that makes them a seriously attractive prospect for players this summer.

Casemiro is on his way out. The midfield needs rebuilding. Anderson and Tonali are both on the list. But what do the players themselves want?

Anderson: ‘All my eyes are on the World Cup’

The Nottingham Forest star has been asked about his future while away with England. His answer? Polite. Professional. And utterly non committal.

“We’ve obviously got the World Cup this summer, so all my eyes are on that and playing for England,” Anderson said. “I’ve obviously got the badge on now, so that’s what I’m thinking about at the moment.”

Notice what he didn’t say. He didn’t rule out a move. He didn’t commit to Forest. He just kicked the can down the road.

Fair enough. He’s 23. He’s becoming a regular for England. He knows Forest will demand a huge fee especially with Manchester City also lurking. Why would he rush a decision now?

Anderson watched from the bench as Jordan Henderson and James Garner played in midfield against Uruguay. He knows the competition is fierce. But he’s handling it well.

“We’re all sort of competing with each other but we’re all really good mates within the group,” he said. “There’s definitely a great balance. The competitiveness is definitely there and we’re really enjoying it.”

Classy answer. But it doesn’t tell us anything about where he’ll be playing next season.

Tonali: Newcastle relaxed, agent talking

Now for the other one. Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle are reportedly calm about his future. He’s under contract until 2029, with an option for another year. That’s about as secure as it gets.

But here’s the problem. His agent, Giuseppe Riso, has been doing a lot of talking.

“If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be hot on his heels?” Riso said recently. “I don’t know, but it’s very likely. Everyone is waiting for the World Cup; then a thousand scenarios will unfold.”

That’s not the sound of an agent who expects his client to stay put.

Newcastle are frustrated with Riso’s public comments. And you can see why. Tonali only arrived at St James’ Park after a long, drawn out saga. He’s their marquee man. And now his agent is already dangling him in front of Europe’s biggest clubs.

United are watching. So are City and Arsenal. If Tonali shines at the World Cup this summer, the bidding war will be ridiculous.

What it means for United

Carrick needs midfielders. That much is clear. Casemiro is leaving. The squad needs fresh legs and younger blood.

Anderson is Premier League proven, English, and still improving. He’d cost a fortune but he fits the profile United want.

Tonali is more expensive, more experienced, and comes with an agent who loves the spotlight. Newcastle don’t want to sell. But if the player pushes? That changes everything.

Neither Anderson nor Tonali have said they want to leave. But neither has said they want to stay either.

And in football, that’s as good as leaving the door wide open.
