The hunt for a new trainer for the senior national team of Nigeria will begin again in earnest after the end of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Technical head of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Austine Eguavoen, directed the team’s winning effort to secure a spot at the next AFCON in a temporary role, and he is anticipated to return to his position after the series ends.

One of the managers who was earlier expected to take over the position after Finidi George was dismissed in June was Swedish coach Janne Andersson. However, a dispute regarding his start date and other parts of the planned agreement caused discussions about employing him to fail.

Andersson, whose previous role was with the senior national team of Sweden, is now connected to a job in the Swedish league with Djurgarden IF. While he remained quiet about stories of his interest in the role, he disclosed that he has declined offers from Nigeria and Latvia.

“There have been several attractive roles, but it’s just that I haven’t chosen to speak on them,” the 62-year-old told Fotbollskanalen.

“Latvia and Nigeria discussed it, and then I felt I could talk about those. There have also been others that didn’t lead anywhere.”
