Aston Villa ended a 30 year wait for major silverware after defeating Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Managed by Europa League specialist Unai Emery, Villa produced a composed and clinical display at Besiktas Park to secure the club’s first trophy since the 1996 English League Cup. Their first continental title since winning the European Cup in 1982.
Thirty years. Gone.
Prince William watches on
Among the spectators was Prince William, the Prince of Wales. A lifelong Villa supporter. He witnessed the club lift silverware in its first European final appearance since his birth.
The Prince will have enjoyed that.
Clinical first half
Villa showed attacking intent from the opening minutes. Morgan Rogers nearly struck after only two minutes, a powerful effort that forced Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu into an early save.
Freiburg, playing in their first European final since their formation, threatened occasionally through set pieces. Nicolas Hoefler came close. Johan Manzambi tested Emiliano Martinez from distance.
But Villa’s superior quality gradually began to show.
The breakthrough arrived four minutes before halftime. A cleverly worked corner routine. Rogers delivered a cross to the edge of the area. Youri Tielemans met the ball with a stunning volley. 1-0.
Moments later, it was 2-0. Emiliano Buendía found space outside the penalty area and curled a brilliant strike into the top left corner. The stadium erupted. Villa were in dreamland.
Game over
Buoyed by confidence after the restart, Villa continued to dominate. Buendía nearly added another with an audacious chip.
Then, in the 58th minute, he turned provider. His cross took a favorable deflection into the path of Rogers, who slid home from close range. 3-0. Game over.
Villa continued to create chances. John McGinn was denied by Atubolu. Amadou Onana struck the post. But the outcome was already beyond doubt.
Emery does it again
As the final whistle blew, jubilant celebrations erupted among Villa players and supporters. The club’s first European trophy in 44 years.
For Unai Emery? His fifth Europa League title. Three with Sevilla. One with Villarreal. Now one with Aston Villa.
The man is a machine.
The bottom line
Aston Villa are champions of Europe. Not the Champions League but this? This means everything.
Thirty years without a trophy. Decades of hurt. Relegation battles. Near misses. False dawns.
Emery has delivered. Prince William was there to see it.
Villa are back. And they’re not going away.
