Harry Kane admitted Bayern Munich “didn’t kill the game” as the Bavarians’ unbeaten Bundesliga run was brutally ended by a 2-1 comeback defeat away to FC Augsburg on Saturday.

The England captain, who had fired Bayern into a first half lead, cut a frustrated figure post match, pinpointing a lack of clinical edge as the reason for their downfall. “We had moments where we could have actually decided the game,” Kane told reporters. “Our final touch wasn’t quite clean, the final pass was lacking. At 1-0, the game is always open… you can be punished for it.”

It was a classic case of a dominant side failing to put a resilient opponent to bed. Kane acknowledged Bayern’s first half was “okay,” but felt they let Augsburg hang in the contest. The hosts’ goalkeeper made several key saves, and Bayern’s fluidity evaporated after the break as the physical toll of a congested fixture list seemed to kick in.

“In the second half, we lacked a bit of energy; we weren’t as fluid with the ball,” Kane conceded. “Respect to our opponents: they put on more pressure and made it difficult. It’s been a tough stretch with a lot of games.”

The result, Bayern’s first league loss under Vincent Kompany, throws the title race wide open, with rivals now sensing a rare moment of vulnerability. For a team accustomed to relentless efficiency, this was an uncharacteristic slip, failing to convert dominance into a secure lead.

Kane and his teammates have no time to dwell, however. The focus immediately shifts to Wednesday’s Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven. “Ultimately, things move quickly,” Kane stated, sounding a note of urgency. The response in Europe will now be scrutinised as the true measure of this Bayern side’s mentality after a bitter and unexpected domestic setback.
