Bayern Munich director of sport Max Eberl has insisted he is not losing sleep over his own future at the Allianz Arena, with the club set to decide on a new deal later this year as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

The 52 year old has been instrumental in Bayern’s revival over the past 18 months, overseeing a string of smart transfer deals and locking down the club’s biggest stars to new contracts.

But despite all that good work, his own position is far from certain. Eberl’s current deal expires in 2027, and the Bavarian giants will make a decision on his future at the annual general meeting later this year.

Speaking to TZ’s Absolute Football, Eberl made it clear he is not sweating the uncertainty.

“It used to make me very nervous,” he admitted. “I learned how things work at Bayern. If I do my job well for FC Bayern, the people I frequently discuss and talk to will also make their decisions.

“Like I said: I’m calm and focused on what’s happening on the pitch.”

It is a measured response from a man who has plenty of reasons to be confident.

The Eberl impact

Let’s rewind 18 months. Bayern were a club in transition. The transfer market had been unkind. Top targets were slipping through their fingers.

Fast forward to today, and the picture looks very different.

Luis Diaz the big money acquisition who arrived after Bayern missed out on their primary targets, has been a revelation this season. Michael Olise was plucked from Crystal Palace in 2024 and has settled seamlessly.

Then there are the contract extensions. Joshua Kimmich. Alphonso Davies. Jamal Musiala. All secured in 2025. Dayot Upamecano followed earlier this year.

That is not luck. That is good management.

The wage bill challenge

Eberl has not had it all his own way, though. The bumper new deals for Musiala, Kimmich, Davies and Upamecano sent the wage bill soaring.

His solution? Trim the squad size and lean on the reserves.

Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman were moved on, freeing up significant space. Raphael Guerreiro and Leon Goretzka are expected to follow them out the door at the end of the season.

The result? A leaner, younger, more sustainable squad. And a wage bill that is finally heading in the right direction.

Kane and Neuer: what’s the latest?

Eberl also addressed the futures of two Bayern icons Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer.

On Kane, the news is positive. Initial talks have gone well, and Eberl will sit down with the striker’s representatives in the summer to hash out a new deal. The Bayern chief remains confident the England captain will put pen to paper and stay in Munich beyond 2027.

Neuer is a different story. The veteran goalkeeper, now 40, is entering the final phase of his career. Eberl has put the ball firmly in Neuer’s court.

“If he feels he can still contribute at the top level for one more season, we will offer him a new deal,” Eberl said, though he stopped short of confirming the widely reported pay cut that Bayern are expected to demand.

What comes next

For now, Eberl is focused on the run in. Bayern are alive in all three competitions with two months of the season remaining, and the fans are dreaming of silverware.

His own future will be decided in due course. If the club’s hierarchy decide he is the man to lead them into the next era, a new deal will follow. If not, he will walk away with his head held high.

Either way, Eberl is not losing sleep. He has been around long enough to know how this works.

Do the job well. Let the rest take care of itself.
