Chelsea claimed first place in the UEFA Conference League (UECL) group stage with a 5-1 triumph at home over Shamrock Rovers, making it six victories from six in this season’s primary competition.

After being dismissed at the beginning of the campaign, Chelsea have amazed analysts and followers alike with their Premier League (PL) performance as they sit second in the standings behind Liverpool. In the UECL, however, they were consistently predicted to excel, so five wins from their five games prior to kick-off were expected. Mykhaylo Mudryk’s recent failed substance test has dampened spirits at Stamford Bridge slightly, but the Blues were in a scoring mood in the opening half here. They took some time to settle, and the visitors, who themselves could advance directly to the last 16 depending on results elsewhere, had an excellent opportunity to break the deadlock when Johnny Kenny mishit his shot when unmarked eight yards from goal.

Midway through the half, though, Chelsea were handed the lead when Darragh Burns nodded toward goal with Leon Pöhls already coming out to collect, allowing Marc Guiu to head into an open net. Shamrock, to their credit, did level the score courtesy of Markus Poom – son of former PL goalkeeper Mart – volleyed in via Cesare Casadei’s deflection, but they sabotaged themselves again shortly after. This time, Daniel Cleary was at fault, underhitting a pass back to Pöhls that was intercepted by Guiu before the Spaniard rounded the keeper and slotted in from a sharp angle. Before long, the Blues increased their lead thanks to a composed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall strike and, on the stroke of halftime, Guiu nodded Noni Madueke’s cross into the corner to complete his hat-trick.

With the outcome already secured, Chelsea substituted Noni Madueke for Harvey Vale at the interval, but they extended their lead further by the hour mark. It was a spectacular effort, too, as Marc Cucurella struck a clean shot in off the post from the edge of the area. Substitute João Félix had a couple of chances to add to Shamrock’s misery, but shot wide before being denied by Pöhls. That ultimately didn’t matter, though, as Chelsea ran down the clock with total comfort to make it eight wins in a row and 11 games without a loss in all competitions. This was not the outcome Shamrock had hoped for, but they remain in the tournament thanks to their earlier performances and will discover their play-off opponents on Friday.
