A quick strike from Álvaro Rodríguez was sufficient for Getafe to achieve a crucial 1-0 home victory over R.C.D. Espanyol at the Estadio Coliseum, extending their impressive home record to just one defeat in nine fixtures (W3, D5).

Getafe appeared as the stronger team from the outset and didn’t have to wait too long to shatter the stalemate, as Rodríguez seized upon the first opportunity he had to send the ball into the back of the net within eight minutes. The Real Madrid loanee headed home a flawless cross from Luis Milla to register his second goal of the season while handing the hosts an early advantage. Espanyol attempted to advance up the field in an effort to reclaim a position in the game, but their absence of creativity stopped them from offering a menace near David Soria’s net. The hosts regularly exploited gaps in their opponent’s fragile defensive line, but despite surpassing their rivals 5:0 in efforts on target, they only had the solitary goal to reflect their dominance by halftime.

In a bid to alter proceedings, Espanyol manager Manolo González introduced Walid Cheddira onto the field for the second half, with the tactical shift resulting in two forwards playing higher up for Los Pericos. The replacement came mere inches from levelling after a low cross but failed to guide the ball into the net from inside the six-yard box. Alex Král likewise nearly brought the visitors on terms, but his attempt veered wide following a deflection off a Getafe defender.

The second half was considerably more energetic than the first, as both sides uncovered more space moving forward, and while this led to a rise in goal-scoring chances, neither team succeeded in finding the back of the net. Ultimately, despite their second-half advancements, Espanyol succumbed to another defeat, their 10th of the season, leaving the Catalan squad in the relegation spots. Victory creates a buffer from the bottom three for Getafe, with the Madrid-based club three points ahead of their opponents, who remain in 18th position.
