Spain’s Lamine Yamal has been ranked as the most valuable player at the 2026 World Cup, edging out Manchester City striker Erling Haaland for the top spot in the latest Transfermarkt valuations.

The 18 year old Barcelona winger shares a €200 million (£169m) valuation with Haaland, the only two players in world football currently rated at that level. However, it is Yamal who claims the number one position due to the weighting system employed by the German transfer portal, which places significant emphasis on the trajectory of a player’s market value.

When two players carry identical valuations, the one whose worth is trending upwards is ranked higher, a criterion that works firmly in Yamal’s favour following his meteoric rise at Camp Nou.

The same principle explains why several other elite names find themselves lower than anticipated. Vinícius Júnior, for instance, sits at the bottom of the €140 million bracket, with his value having gradually declined from a peak of €200 million in December 2024. The Brazilian was valued at €150 million at the end of last year but has seen his rating dip amid fluctuating form.

Spanish clubs dominate top ten

The rankings underscore the enduring strength of La Liga’s two powerhouse clubs. Of the ten most valuable players at the tournament, half ply their trade in Spain.

Real Madrid contribute three names to the list in Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham, while Barcelona are represented by Yamal and Pedri, whose creative influence remains central to Luis de la Fuente’s plans.

The remaining places are filled by Premier League representation through Haaland and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, alongside Paris Saint Germain trio João Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha.

Yamal carries Spanish hopes

Spain progress to the Round of 32 as Group winners, though their performances have lacked the spark many expected from a squad brimming with attacking talent. The burden of expectation now falls heavily on Yamal’s young shoulders as La Roja seek to navigate the knockout rounds.

The teenager’s rapid ascent has been one of football’s most compelling narratives, and his valuation reflects not just current ability but the vast potential that has made him the centrepiece of Barcelona’s revival and Spain’s future.

With the knockout stages now upon us, Yamal will be tasked with translating that market value into match winning performances on the game’s grandest stage.
