Dean Huijsen struck the decisive goal as Bournemouth secured a slender 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Vitality Stadium, overtaking them in the Premier League (PL) standings as a consequence.

Having triumphed in each of their previous two trips to Bournemouth, ex-fan favourite Dominic Solanke was optimistic his latest team could make it three as the first notable opportunity of the match came his way.

However, Huijsen managed to unsettle the Spurs attacker, and after Evanilson had shot at Fraser Forster from close range, the 19-year-old opened the scoring from a corner, arriving at the far post to nod in unchallenged.

The home side maintained their superiority for the remainder of the half, with multiple chances to extend their lead as Marcus Tavernier netted from an offside position before forcing an instinctive save from Tottenham’s reserve goalkeeper with a close-range header.

Following the interval, Bournemouth created yet another opening to increase their advantage when last week’s hat-trick scorer Justin Kluivert surged towards goal, only to shoot directly at Forster.

Ange Postecoglou urgently sought a response, introducing captain Son Heung-min, who slotted in a rebound from an offside position shortly after entering the fray. With an hour elapsed, the momentum firmly shifted to Tottenham as James Maddison curled an attempt wide of the far post and Pedro Porro unleashed a ferocious shot that was blocked by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

That Tottenham resurgence proved fleeting, however, with the Cherries retaliating and nearly scoring a second goal after a mistake by Forster. When the visitors carelessly lost possession in their defensive zone, record signing Evanilson thought he’d bagged his fifth PL goal of the campaign by converting from close range, but he was ruled offside.

Before this fixture, six of the last nine head-to-head clashes had yielded over 3.5 goals, but it seemed increasingly likely that just one strike would decide this encounter as Tavernier squandered two additional promising chances.

As time ebbed away, Bournemouth relentlessly pressed forward, creating a flurry of opportunities that went unconverted. Ultimately, their failure to increase the tally proved irrelevant, as Spurs delivered frustratingly little in the dying minutes. The victory lifts Andoni Iraola’s squad to ninth, ahead of Tottenham in the PL table, and just a single point away from the European qualification spots.
