Schalke 04 have initiated discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential loan move for Brazilian defender Igor Julio, with the Bundesliga side also seeking to include a purchase option in any agreement.

The Gelsenkirchen based club have identified the 28 year old centre back as a primary target for their defensive reinforcement this summer, though negotiations remain at a delicate stage with the financial structure of any deal yet to be resolved.
According to Sky Sport Germany, the financial framework surrounding both the loan fee and the valuation of any prospective buy option are proving the principal obstacles to progress. Talks between the clubs are understood to be ongoing as both parties attempt to bridge the gap on terms.
Brighton’s Defensive Rebuild Underway
Igor’s standing at the Amex Stadium has appeared increasingly uncertain over recent months. The Brazilian endured a challenging second campaign with Albion, with injury restricting him to just 13 Premier League appearances, a significant reduction from the 33 outings he managed in his debut season on the south coast.
His loan spell at West Ham United last term was curtailed prematurely, further casting doubt over his long term future under Fabian Hürzeler. The Brighton head coach is overseeing a substantial reshaping of his defensive options as the club prepare for a campaign that will include European competition.
Albion have already moved to address their backline requirements, with the club pursuing defensive reinforcements including a move for Michael Svoboda and a prospective deal for Luka Vuskovic, signalling a clear intention to refresh the defensive cohort.
Potential Exit Would Clear Space
A switch to Schalke would represent an opportunity for Igor to reignite his career in Germany, though the deal remains far from complete. The Bundesliga side are understood to be keen on securing a purchase option as part of any loan agreement, a condition that would provide them with future security while offering Brighton a clear pathway to a permanent exit.
For Brighton, attaching a credible purchase route to the loan could prove an attractive proposition, allowing them to offload a player who has fallen down the pecking order while simultaneously freeing wages and squad space for incoming reinforcements.
The outcome of negotiations is likely to hinge on whether the two clubs can find common ground on the financial aspects, with Schalke’s budget constraints a significant factor in proceedings.
Igor’s representatives are monitoring the situation closely, though any move would require all parties to reach agreement before the transfer window closes.
