Crystal Palace have held exploratory talks over a summer move for Juventus striker Lois Openda, with new manager Pierre Sage identifying the Belgian as a key target for his rebuild at Selhurst Park.
The 26 year old has endured a difficult debut season in Turin since joining from RB Leipzig, managing just two goals in 34 appearances across all competitions. Juventus were obligated to make his loan permanent for €40m after finishing inside Serie A’s top ten, but the club are now eager to move him on.
Interest from Premier League clubs
Everton and Leeds United are also monitoring Openda’s situation, but Palace have taken the most proactive approach with preliminary discussions already underway. Sage, who was appointed Eagles boss earlier this month, is said to appreciate the forward’s profile and believes his pace and pressing ability would suit his system.
The wage hurdle
The main obstacle to a deal appears to be Openda’s salary, which stands at approximately €7.4m per season (around £120,000 per week). To facilitate a move, Juventus are reportedly willing to consider flexible structures, including a loan with an option or obligation to buy.
Competition for his signature
Beyond the Premier League trio, Nottingham Forest, AS Monaco, Paris FC and RC Lens are also named as potential suitors. However, Palace’s early engagement in negotiations places them in a strong position, and the London club’s need for attacking reinforcements is particularly acute with Jean Philippe Mateta facing an uncertain future at Selhurst Park.
