Chelsea bolstered their ambitions for a top-four finish in the Premier League by clinching a 3-0 triumph against Aston Villa, whose streak without a victory has now stretched to eight matches across various tournaments following this setback at Stamford Bridge.

Wasting little time in establishing dominance in West London, Enzo Maresca’s team opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Nicolas Jackson drilled a precise left-footed shot past Emiliano Martínez at his near post. Villa were frustrated by Marc Cucurella’s tackle on Jaden Philogene during the build-up to the goal before the Spaniard delivered a cut-back to Jackson. However, the full-back appeared to touch the ball first. The Senegalese forward had now netted the opening goal within 10 minutes in four separate Premier League matches this year – more than any other player.

This was another blow in a difficult spell for Unai Emery’s squad, who could have equalised if Ollie Watkins had passed to Morgan Rogers instead of taking a weak attempt straight at Robert Sanchez. The Villans were increasingly fragile and conceded an unusual indirect free-kick when Pau Torres was penalised for a pass back to Martínez. The Argentine keeper stopped Cole Palmer’s shot from the resulting set-piece but nearly made a critical mistake moments later when he passed directly to Jackson before recovering impressively.

Chelsea maintained their momentum and doubled their advantage through a stunning sequence of play, as Enzo Fernández brilliantly controlled Palmer’s pass and slotted a composed right-footed finish into the bottom corner. Martínez seemed to be struggling as the first half ended and was replaced by Robin Olsen, who last featured for the Villans on the closing day of last season, when they conceded five against Crystal Palace.

Olsen was initially untested as Jackson missed the target after being set up by Fernández. However, the Swedish goalkeeper was powerless in the 83rd minute when Palmer unleashed an exceptional long-range effort that found the back of the net. The goal was a landmark moment for Palmer, making him the second-fastest player to reach 30 Premier League goals for Chelsea – achieving the milestone in 46 games, just five more than Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who did it in 41.

Maresca’s men comfortably managed the rest of the second half to secure all three points, lifting them to third place in the standings. The clean sheet will be especially cherished by the hosts, as it ends a streak of six consecutive home matches in the league without keeping their opponents scoreless. Meanwhile, Villa remain winless in five successive Premier League fixtures and are stuck in 12th position heading into the new week.
