Xabi Alonso could be heading back to the Premier League.

The Spanish tactician has been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid in January, just eight months into a reign that promised so much but delivered very little. Now, according to David Ornstein, Chelsea are exploring the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge for next season.

And Alonso? He’s open to it.

What went wrong at Real Madrid?

When Alonso was appointed at the Bernabeu last May, it felt like destiny. The former midfielder, who’d just done the unthinkable at Bayer Leverkusen, an invincible domestic double, ending Bayern’s Bundesliga stranglehold was supposed to be the man to restore Madrid’s European crown.

Instead, he was gone before the snow melted.

But here’s the thing: it wasn’t really his fault. Alonso had a clear vision. He was getting results. But he never had the full backing of the board. Or the dressing room. When the sharks started circling, he was the one thrown overboard.

That doesn’t make him a bad manager. It makes him a victim of Madrid’s chaos.

What he did at Leverkusen was special

Let’s not forget what Alonso achieved in Germany. He took a Leverkusen side that had never won the Bundesliga and turned them into invincibles. Domestic double. Bayern smashed. European finalists.

That’s not luck. That’s coaching.

The problem is Madrid burns bright and fast. If you don’t win the Champions League in your first season, the vultures gather. Alonso learned that the hard way.

Chelsea’s long list of candidates

Chelsea are casting a wide net. Cesc Fabregas. Andoni Iraola. Marco Silva. Oliver Glasner. Filipe Luis. All on the list.

But Alonso is the biggest name. The one with the highest ceiling. The one who’s actually done it, built a team, broken a dynasty, made players better.

One could argue he’s the best choice for the job. Chelsea need a project. A direction. Someone with a clear plan. That’s exactly what Alonso had at Madrid before it all fell apart.

The Liverpool question

Many expected Alonso to end up at Anfield. He was the natural successor to Jurgen Klopp. A former player. A fan favourite. A manager with the same romantic pull.

But Liverpool stuck with Arne Slot. Alonso moved on. Now Chelsea could benefit from that decision.

If Alonso lands at Stamford Bridge, it’ll be his first Premier League job since playing for Liverpool and briefly Bayern Munich. He knows the league. He knows the pressure. He knows what it takes to win.

What happens next?

Nothing is decided yet. Chelsea are still assessing their options. Alonso is one of several names on the list.

But the fact that he’s open to the move? That’s significant. A manager of his calibre doesn’t wait around forever.

Stamford Bridge could be the place where Alonso rebuilds his reputation. And if he does? Liverpool might end up regretting the one that got away.
