‘I wish him well’ Hughes breaks silence on Liverpool job as Iraola waits in wings

Richard Hughes has finally spoken about his old mucker Andoni Iraola and the Liverpool chief’s carefully chosen words won’t do much to silence the rumours.

The Reds’ sporting director worked with Iraola at Bournemouth. The pair had a good thing going on the south coast. Then Liverpool came calling for Hughes, and Iraola was linked with the Anfield hotseat almost immediately.

Now, with Arne Slot under pressure after a disappointing title defence, the Spaniard’s name just won’t go away.

“I am really happy for him, because I suppose it is a very good chance for him,” Hughes said of Iraola’s current situation.

“I obviously wish him all the best. I am sure he will also be doing a very good job there at Liverpool.”

There.

Not “he’s not coming.” Not “Slot is our man.” Just warmth. Just respect. Just enough to keep the gossip columns ticking over.

The small matter of Slot’s future

Here’s where it gets awkward.

Liverpool currently stand by Slot. No change expected before next season. That’s the official line. The Dutchman spent £446million last summer. The club isn’t going to yank the rug after one bad year.

But “before next season” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

If results don’t improve? If Liverpool miss out on Champions League football entirely? If the mood at Anfield turns ugly?

Hughes may well be picking up the phone.

Iraola waiting in the wings

The Bournemouth boss has done wonders on the south coast. Again. He’s proven he can build a side, improve players, and go toe to toe with the big boys on a fraction of the budget.

Sound familiar? It should. That’s exactly what Hughes watched him do for years.

The pair have a pre existing relationship. Trust. Understanding. In modern football, that counts for a hell of a lot.

What happens now?

Short term? Slot stays. Liverpool have three games left to secure Champions League football. That’s the immediate priority.

Long term? Iraola’s name isn’t going anywhere. Hughes didn’t shut it down. Didn’t even try.

And in football, silence speaks louder than words.

If Slot turns it around? Brilliant. Problem solved.

If not? Hughes has got his man already lined up. And this time, he won’t have to explain why he’s going back to a familiar face.

The next few weeks just got a whole lot more interesting.
