Jules Kounde has opened up on the Barcelona legend he wishes he’d shared a pitch with and the French defender has plumped for a compatriot.
The 27 year old currently lines up alongside the likes of Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski at Camp Nou. Hansi Flick’s side are flying. But Kounde’s got one eye on the past.
When asked by the club’s media which Blaugrana icon he’d love to have played alongside, he didn’t hesitate.
“I’d choose Thierry Henry,” Kounde said.
“I really like his mentality, his quality. He was a very fast player and very good with the ball. He could also play in midfield. He was a very complete player.”
High praise from a man who knows a thing or two about defending against the best.
The two wingers who gave him nightmares
Kounde was also asked to name the toughest opponents he’s faced during his career. His answers? Not exactly a shock.
“[Vinicius Junior] is the player who has given me the most problems,” the Frenchman admitted.
“He’s a great player, very fast and constantly changing direction.”
The Barcelona and Real Madrid rivalry needs no introduction. Kounde and Vinicius have gone toe to toe plenty of times. Sounds like the Brazilian has come out on top more often than not.
But Vinicius isn’t the only wide man to have caused Kounde sleepless nights.
“I also had a very bad time with Rafael Leao,” he added.
The AC Milan flyer is a handful on his day. Pace, power, swagger. Kounde clearly hasn’t forgotten.
El Clasico awaits
Kounde won’t have to wait long for another crack at Vinicius.
Barcelona host Real Madrid on Sunday at Camp Nou. Big one. Always is.
Flick’s side are top of the table. Madrid are breathing down their necks. A win for either could swing the title race.
Kounde will likely be at right back. Vinicius will be coming down his flank. Get the popcorn ready.
As for Henry? The French legend won two league titles and a Champions League at Barca between 2007 and 2010. Some players never get to share a pitch with greatness.
Kounde’s just named his dream teammate. Shame they’re about 15 years apart.
