Jamal Musiala delivered an 85th-minute equaliser as Bayern Munich extended their undefeated start to the Bundesliga campaign, salvaging a 1-1 stalemate with Borussia Dortmund in the 136th Der Klassiker.

Germany’s showcase fixture arrived at a pivotal stage for both clubs, with Bayern seeking to assert their dominance in the Bundesliga title race and potentially push Dortmund out of contention entirely. An imposing start from the visitors suggested that could soon materialise as Bayern pushed for an opener, with only an acrobatic stop from Gregor Kobel thwarting Leroy Sané’s superb shot within the first 10 minutes. The Dortmund goalkeeper appeared to be labouring physically afterward, as was defender Waldemar Anton, whose Klassiker debut ended prematurely after 17 minutes due to injury.

Having weathered Bayern’s early storm, Die Schwarzgelben regrouped and took the lead in spectacular fashion. Luring the visitors forward during a build-up from defence, Nico Schlotterbeck released Jamie Gittens down the left flank, and the young English star sprinted at lightning speed past a struggling Konrad Laimer, setting himself up to slot a composed finish beyond Manuel Neuer. Gittens’ third goal in as many outings marked the first Bayern had conceded in eight fixtures, and it gave Vincent Kompany much to ponder at halftime, as did a knock to Harry Kane, which saw the Bayern striker exit before the break.

The Rekordmeister returned with renewed vigour after the interval, dominating possession in Dortmund’s half and piling on relentless pressure. After being set up by Musiala, Thomas Müller was thwarted by an outstanding stop from Kobel, while Musiala and Sané also missed the target. Despite Bayern’s offensive push for a leveller, chances emerged on the counter for Dortmund, who might have doubled their lead if not for a stellar save from Neuer to deny Marcel Sabitzer.

Frustrations boiled over as Dortmund clung to their narrow advantage, but as the game entered its final 10 minutes, a Bayern team who had scored 3+ goals in nearly all their previous away league matches this season seemed devoid of ideas in attack.

A late free-kick shifted momentum, though, as Dortmund failed to clear the set-piece after blocking the initial attempt, enabling Michael Olise to find Musiala, who headed in the crucial equaliser. The home crowd collectively held their breath when Sané hit the ground under a challenge from Ramy Bensebaini moments later, but no penalty was awarded, resulting in shared points in another thrilling clash between Germany’s heavyweights. The gap between the teams remains 10 points in Bayern’s favour, as they extended their unbeaten streak at Signal Iduna Park to eight encounters.
