Good news on the Rooney front. Kai Rooney is back on his feet.

The Manchester United academy prospect has delivered a positive update after a frustrating thigh injury cut his season short back in March. And honestly? The kid needed a break.

Kai, son of United legend and all time top scorer Wayne, took to Instagram to share the news. A picture of himself in full United training gear at Carrington, boots laced up, with a simple message: “Back running.”

Sometimes less is more. That’s one of those moments.

Just a month ago, the 16 year old was gutted. Properly gutted. He announced his campaign was over with a dejected post: “Disappointed to be out for the rest of the season. Back stronger next pre season.”

Now he’s already putting in the work. That’s the mentality.

The injury came at the worst possible time. Kai had been enjoying a breakout season under Darren Fletcher’s guidance, looking sharper and sharper. He made his Old Trafford debut in January during an FA Youth Cup clash and showed exactly where he gets them instincts from.

Two goals. One assist. In just 119 minutes of football.

That’s a goal contribution every 40 minutes. Not bad for a 16 year old carrying one of the biggest surnames in English football.

But here’s the thing, this kid has had to deal with setbacks before. In September 2025, he suffered a foot injury right after getting a call up to the U19 squad. That’s a big deal at his age. He posted a photo in a protective boot with the heartbreaking caption: “Life can’t get worse.”

Now another injury. Another rebuild. But he’s already running again.

The thigh issue also wiped out what was meant to be a big developmental year, including appearances in the Super Cup in Northern Ireland. That tournament was special, it’s where his dad first made a name for himself as a kid at Everton. Poetic, really.

Wayne Rooney has always tried to stay hands off. Let the boy play. Let him enjoy it.

Rooney senior told BBC Sport earlier: “I just let him play. I think they started the competition well, they won 3-0, he scored the penalty and got an assist. So I think he started OK. He just plays and that’s all he’s done.”

No pressure then. Just the weight of being a Rooney at Manchester United.

Kai is still only 16. Plenty of time. But these injuries are frustrating. He’s already shown he’s got the finishing touch, that natural instinct you can’t teach. Now it’s about staying fit and kicking on.

Back running. That’s the first step. Expect more updates soon from Carrington. The Rooney name isn’t going anywhere.
