AS Monaco are prepared to activate their €11m option to sign Ansu Fati permanently this summer but only if the Barcelona outcast agrees to slash his wages dramatically.
The forward has spent the 2025/26 season on loan in Ligue 1. Nine goals in 25 appearances. A key role in Monaco’s push for European football. On the pitch, it has worked.
Off it? The numbers do not add up.
The wage problem
According to Mundo Deportivo, Monaco are keen to keep Fati. The club have seen enough. They want to trigger the purchase clause.
But there is a catch. A big one.
Fati’s salary is considered too high for a Ligue 1 club. This season, Barcelona have been covering a significant portion of his wages. That arrangement ends if Monaco buy him outright.
For a permanent deal to go through, the 23 year old would need to accept a substantial reduction in his pay packet. We are talking serious money off the table.
Barcelona’s position
The Catalan club are desperate to offload unwanted stars. The summer window is about lowering the wage bill and generating fresh revenue. Getting Fati’s salary off the books would be a major step.
The €11m fee? That is not a windfall. But it is something. And in Barcelona’s current financial reality, something is better than nothing.
The loan agreement also includes a buy back clause in Barcelona’s favour for just over €25m. That means the club retain some control over his long term future. If Fati rediscovers his best form in France, they could bring him back.
Fati’s dilemma
The player has a decision to make. Stay at Monaco on reduced terms, or return to Barcelona where his future is uncertain at best.
He signed a contract extension until 2028 before leaving on loan, with part of his salary deferred. That means he is already owed money by Barcelona. Walking away from that is not straightforward.
But staying at Barcelona means more bench warming. More frustration. More what ifs.
Monaco offer regular football. A system that suits him. A club that wants him.
The bottom line
Monaco want Fati. Barcelona want to sell. The only obstacle is money.
