Wayne Rooney has fired a warning to Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s potential title decider at the Etihad, insisting Manchester City’s psychological strength and know how gives them a “clear edge” over Mikel Arteta’s nervy leaders.
The former England captain, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, did not hold back. Arsenal may be nine points clear, albeit having played two games more but Rooney believes the champions are the ones with the calmer heads.
“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got,” Rooney said. “They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players.”
‘That negative mindset really impacts you’
Arsenal have stumbled. A 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday opened the door. City walked straight through it, beating Chelsea 3-0 to cut the gap and pile the pressure back on Arteta’s side.
Rooney knows the feeling. He has been in title races. He has seen teams crack.
“They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’” he said.
“That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance.”
‘Arsenal may need to play dirty’
Whoever wins Sunday’s clash will be favourites for the title. Rooney is clear on that. A draw? That suits City more than Arsenal.
“A draw is a good point for Arsenal,” he said. But they will need to earn it the hard way.
“Be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break.
“Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring.”
That is not a tactical breakdown. That is a warning. Arsenal cannot just try to outplay City. They have to outfight them.
Spurs disaster warning
Rooney also turned his attention to Tottenham, who ended the weekend in the relegation zone after defeat at Sunderland.
Roberto de Zerbi’s first game in charge was flat. There was no bounce. No energy. No belief.
“Sometimes you get a bounce but I think you get that when a new manager comes in and you are front footed and aggressive on the ball,” Rooney said. “I thought they were a bit in between.”
De Zerbi “needs to find some answers quickly,” Rooney added. Because if Spurs go down, it will be a catastrophe.
“It will be a disaster for them if they do go down,” he said. “I think that’s where some of those players probably are looking at it thinking if they go down they can move on and go to a different club.
“If they don’t get back in the Premier League in the first year, that will be an absolute nightmare for them.”
Spurs have not won a league match in 2026. Their next chance comes at home to Brighton on Saturday.
“If they can do that then they give themselves a chance,” Rooney said. “The longer it goes without winning is difficult for them.”
The bottom line
Rooney has called it. City have the psychological edge. Arsenal are the ones with something to prove.
Sunday at the Etihad is not just a title decider. It is a test of nerve. And Rooney believes the champions have more of it.
