Manchester United are eyeing a shock summer move for Brentford captain Nathan Collins with the Irish defender’s leadership, consistency and physical presence massively appealing to the club’s recruitment chiefs .

The 24 year old Republic of Ireland international has become one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre backs since joining the Bees for a club record £23m in 2023 . Now, with 109 appearances under his belt and a top seven finish in sight, the big boys are circling.

THE INTEREST

Sources have informed TEAMtalk that Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all monitored Collins closely . But it’s United who are “most likely to accelerate matters”, with the club actively assessing centre back options amid uncertainty over several current squad members .

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, believes Collins “has what it takes to make it to the very top” . His consistency, leadership and physical presence are exactly what the club need.

THE DEFENSIVE REBUILD

United are planning a significant defensive overhaul this summer:

A new left back to provide competition for Luke Shaw, with Patrick Dorgu viewed internally as more of a winger

A new central defender and Collins fits the profile

Uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s future, with the England international’s contract expiring

Questions over Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans

THE BRENTFORD FACTOR

Brentford are under no pressure to sell. Collins is club captain, instrumental in their push for European football, and has become a cornerstone of Keith Andrews’ defence.

The Bees would demand a significant fee likely at least £55m , double what they paid Stoke City two years ago. But with United’s need for proven Premier League experience, it’s a price they might be willing to pay.

THE COMPETITION

Collins is not the only Brentford player attracting attention. Igor Thiago, Kevin Schade and Michael Kayode are all being tracked by European clubs . But Collins is the one United want.

THE VERDICT

£55m for a Premier League proven centre back with leadership qualities, 109 appearances under his belt, and his best years ahead of him? In today’s market, that’s not outrageous.

United need defenders. Collins fits the profile. And with interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, the Red Devils may need to move fast.
