Barcelona have shown their hand and it’s a massive boost for Newcastle United.

Hansi Flick left Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha AND Pedri on the bench for Saturday’s La Liga clash with Athletic Bilbao , resting his biggest names for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown at St James’ Park .

The Catalan giants still won 1-0 thanks to Lamine Yamal’s second half strike , but the message was clear: this tie matters more than a league game against Bilbao.

THE ROTATION

Flick made no apologies. “You have to manage minutes and look at the past, but also the future,” he explained after the game. “You have to give everyone opportunities.”

Lewandowski, Raphinha and Pedri all watched from the sidelines. Marcus Rashford started. Ferran Torres led the line. It took Yamal to bail them out.

For Newcastle, that’s a statement. Barca are taking this seriously, seriously enough to prioritise it over domestic duties.

THE HOPE

Here’s the thing: Newcastle battered Athletic Bilbao 3-0 earlier this season . The same Bilbao side that just made Barca work for every inch of their 1-0 win.

If the Magpies can do that to a team that pushed the Catalans to the limit, why can’t they do it to Barca themselves?

Eddie Howe will be pointing that out in team meetings this week.

HOWE’S OWN ROTATION

Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup 3-1 to Manchester City on Saturday but Howe’s team selection raised eyebrows . William Osula started up front. Nick Woltemade was restored to midfield after illness. Anthony Gordon? On the bench.

The England star is now expected to lead the line on Tuesday, looking to add to his 10 Champions League goals this season including one against Barcelona back in September .

THE BIGGEST GAME

Howe didn’t hide it after the City defeat. “In terms of trying to achieve something totally memorable, yes. All energy and focus now go to Tuesday.

“As much as it is easy to be negative in this moment, and I understand we have gone out of the FA Cup, we have the biggest game in the club’s history coming up in no time at all. We have no time to dwell on this.”

That’s the mentality. Barca are resting stars. Newcastle are regrouping. St James’ Park on Tuesday is massive.

THE VERDICT

Barca’s rotation is a sign of respect, they know how dangerous this Newcastle side can be. But it’s also a gamble. If the Magpies turn up and those rested stars are rusty, there’s an opportunity.

Flick’s priority is clear. Now Howe has to make him regret it.
