Willumsen Ended a Goalless Stalemate Less than Three Minutes into Extra Time

Extra time in the NCAA Championship presented a crucial chance, and Nicolas Willumsen capitalized on the occasion.

The junior striker delivered the decisive strike less than three minutes into extra time, lifting the Gauchos to a 1-0 triumph over UCLA in the opening round of the NCAA championship on Thursday night.

“What an exhilarating result for the squad. We went from not expecting to qualify for the championship after a truly frustrating setback to being able to recover and perform arguably our finest match of the season against undoubtedly a very strong adversary,” said UC Santa Barbara manager Tim Vom Steeg. “We’re thrilled. I’m overjoyed for the team. It’s fantastic that we got to enjoy this instead of how things ended last week.”

The Gauchos began energetically, controlling possession and attempts on target in the opening period. During the initial 30 minutes of action, UC Santa Barbara attempted nine shots compared to UCLA’s single effort. Despite the Gauchos’ superiority, the teams remained locked in a goalless stalemate at the interval.

“We made a determined decision from our previous match to this one to force UCLA to defend for extended periods. It’s incredibly challenging to take the ball away from them, so when you do win possession, the last thing you should do is immediately hand it back,” Vom Steeg explained. “Credit goes to the players; we discussed the strategy, we emphasized retaining the ball as much as possible, but overall, it stems from strong displays. Every player — and you can go through everyone involved tonight — they gave their all to maintain possession, and that was a critical factor, I believe, in the match.”

The second half was significantly more balanced in terms of attempts on target and possession time, but the Gauchos still edged the Bruins five to three in shots.

Ethan Senter almost secured the victory in normal time for Santa Barbara in the dying moments, but his precise shot at goal sailed over.

After sitting out the regulation 90 minutes, Kaden Standish joined the game for extra time and made an impact almost instantly, retrieving the ball just outside the penalty area and locating Willumsen, who took one touch before blasting a shot that soared just beyond the reach of the UCLA shot-stopper.

The Gauchos will face Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Palo Alto. The Cardinal are the No. 16 seed in the tournament bracket. This will mark the first-ever NCAA Championship clash between UC Santa Barbara and Stanford.
