La Liga is heading for a blockbuster finish, with the title destined to be decided on the final day for the first time in FIVE years.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have blown the rest of the field away, turning Spain’s top flight into a full blown two horse race. And with a seismic Clasico waiting in the wings on matchday 35, this thing is going right to the wire.

The 2020/2021 season feels like a lifetime ago now. That was the last time anyone dared to break the duopoly, with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid holding their nerve on the final day, coming from behind in Valladolid to snatch the crown from under the noses of their neighbours.

Proper drama. Last day heroics. Everything the neutrals crave.

Since then? It’s been back to business as usual. The big two have turned La Liga into the Scottish League all respect to Celtic and Rangers, with everyone else just making up the numbers.

THE GAP IS GROWING

As we steam towards the final third of the season, third placed Villarreal are already TWELVE points adrift of the summit. Twelve! The Yellow Submarine have been decent this term, but they’re watching the title race from a different postcode.

Last season, Girona had everyone dreaming. Twenty matchdays in the top two, playing football that had Michel’s men looking like the real deal. Then spring hit, the wheels came off, and normal service resumed.

Atletico? They keep flickering. Keep threatening. Then someone turns the pressure up and poof, they vanish faster than a magician’s rabbit.

WHY THIS YEAR’S DIFFERENT

Here’s the thing though, while it’s the same old story with the usual suspects, the actual race itself is absolutely crackers.

The margin between Madrid and Barca is razor thin. Last Monday proved that when the lead changed hands without either side kicking a ball. Both have been erratic lately, dropping points when they should be steamrollering opponents.

Real Madrid keep finding ways to win even when they’re rubbish, that’s the champion’s knack. But Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, have got a resilience about them that’s been missing since Messi waved goodbye.

THE CLASICO FACTOR

Circle matchday 35 in your diary right now. That’s when they meet at the business end of the season, and it could be the decider.

For the first time since that Atletico miracle in 2021, we’re looking at a title race that might actually go to the final day. Last season was done by the penultimate weekend. The three before that? The winners had at least a ten point cushion. Bore fest.

This time feels different. Both sides are dropping silly points. Neither can shake the other off. It’s proper nerve shredding stuff.

THE NUMBERS

Real Madrid are hunting another chunk of history, they’ve already won more titles than anyone and show no signs of stopping. But Barca are defending champions with a point to prove after letting the league slip last season before regrouping.

The head to head could be massive. If one side does the double, that’s six points swing. In a race this tight, that’s the difference between glory and tears.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Barca insiders reckon Flick’s got the dressing room believing again after some ropey months. There’s a steel about them now that was missing when Xavi was in charge.

Madrid’s camp? They’ve been here before. Done it all. Álvaro Arbeloa’s seen every title race imaginable and knows how to manage these run ins better than anyone.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Twelve points clear of the rest. Two giants slugging it out. One massive Clasico. And a final day that could have absolutely everything.

La Liga’s been crying out for a proper thriller. Looks like we’re getting one.
