Pau Cubarsi has opened up on Hansi Flick’s incredible bond with his Barcelona stars, insisting the German boss is more of a protective father figure than a fierce taskmaster.

The La Masia graduate, who has become a mainstay in the Barca backline, lifted the lid on life inside the Catalan dressing room under the former Bayern Munich chief. And it turns out the perceived hard man has a soft centre when it comes to looking after his young guns.

Flick, who took the reins in the summer, has built a reputation for blooding youngsters like Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal. But according to the 17 year old defender, it’s the German’s man management off the pitch that’s really hitting the mark.

“He almost always gives us the same advice: to be ourselves, with confidence and self assurance,” Cubarsi revealed. The centre back clearly feels the love from a manager who has trusted him to shine on the biggest stage.

And despite Flick’s intense touchline demeanour, all wild gesticulations and furious stares, Cubarsi insists the reality could not be more different behind closed doors.

“From the outside, it might seem like he gives us a lot of grief, but inside he always tries to help and protect us,” he added. “The truth is, he’s a very good coach.”

It’s a setup that’s clearly working wonders. Flick’s Barca have been tearing it up this term, blending the fearless academy talents with savvy old heads to play some of the most thrilling football in Europe.

For Cubarsi, who’s already looking like a seasoned pro despite being eligible for a GCSE revision timetable, having a gaffer who’s got your back is everything. The boss ain’t just picking the team, he’s building a family.
