Manchester United have two of the most exciting schoolboys in English football tearing it up for the Under 18s. But only one of them is actually allowed to play for the first team this season.

Kai Rooney, 16 year old son of the club’s all time leading scorer, is eligible to make his senior debut right now. JJ Gabriel, the 15 year old everyone at Carrington is calling “the real deal”, can’t. And it’s all down to a date on the calendar.

The Rule

Premier League regulations state that to play in the competition, a player must have turned 15 by the start of the season . The 2025/26 campaign kicked off in August. Kai Rooney celebrated his 15th birthday in November 2024 . That means he was already 15 when the season started. Legally, Michael Carrick could chuck him on against West Ham tomorrow if he fancied it.

JJ Gabriel? He only turned 15 last October . On the August 31st cut off date, he was still 14. So he’s ineligible for Premier League football until the 2026/27 campaign. Simple as that.

But what about the cups?

Here’s where it gets messy. FA Cup rules don’t have the same age restriction . Gabriel was eligible to feature in United’s third round tie against Brighton. He trained with the first team. The fans were buzzing. Darren Fletcher, then caretaker, was asked directly.

“JJ is a fantastic talent,” Fletcher said. “He’s a young lad with a massive sort of hype, you know there’s a lot of noise around him and deservedly so because he’s a real talented kid” .

But he didn’t play. Fletcher opted against it. “The most important thing is that he keeps developing,” he added . Shea Lacey, another 16 year old, did get his debut that day and got sent off for two bookings. Sometimes the kids are better off watching.

The Numbers

Gabriel has 15 goals in 20 league games for the Under 18s this season . He started both FA Youth Cup ties, played 115 minutes against Derby, and recently had a red card overturned on appeal after a harsh decision against West Brom .

Kai Rooney bagged four goals in the Under 16s’ 6-4 Premier League Cup semi final win over Norwich . Wayne was in the stands watching. Michael Carrick was sat next to him. The kid’s got pedigree, no question.

Fletcher’s Verdict

The Scotsman, who knows a thing or two about bringing through talent, summed up Gabriel perfectly.

“He’s got an enthusiasm for the game that’s just amazing. 15 year old, a bright future ahead of him. I’m super excited by his talent, but he’s still got lots to learn” .

“The world is his oyster and he just needs to go on his journey and his time will come in due course. But for just now, it’s a little bit early I think” .

The Bottom Line

Kai Rooney can play this season. He almost certainly won’t, but he can. JJ Gabriel cannot, no matter how many goals he scores or how many first team training sessions he graces.

The rule is the rule. And for Gabriel, that means waiting until next season to become United’s youngest  ever Premier League player. Given the hype, the goals, and the sheer noise around him, it’ll be worth the wait.
