Sunderland have shipped out attacker Simon Adingra on a shock Deadline Day loan to French side AS Monaco, despite their own push for European football.

The 24 year old’s departure to Ligue 1 was confirmed late on Monday, thinning Regis Le Bris’s options as the Black Cats look to build on a statement 3-0 victory over Burnley last weekend. That win left them sitting eighth in the Premier League, just a point off the Conference League spots in what has been a stellar first season back in the top flight.

Adingra’s exit comes as a surprise given Sunderland’s lofty position, but the Ivorian international had struggled to nail down a regular starting role. He managed just one goal in 15 appearances across all competitions this term, failing to consistently deliver on the promise that prompted his arrival at the Stadium of Light.

The club’s hierarchy and boss Le Bris have clearly decided his minutes are better used elsewhere for now. “It’s a move that gives Simon a chance to play more regularly and for us to assess options,” a club source said. The deal is a straight loan with no obligation to buy, leaving Adingra’s long term future on Wearside uncertain.

His departure does raise questions about squad depth as the fixtures pile up. Sunderland have been one of the stories of the season under Le Bris, playing a vibrant, attacking style that has won plenty of admirers. But maintaining this push into May will require all hands on deck, and losing a senior attacking player however peripheral, is a gamble.

The move suggests confidence in the existing group, with players like the in form Jack Clarke expected to carry the main burden. It also hints at a ruthless streak in Le Bris’s project: if you’re not fully contributing, you can be moved on, even amid a successful campaign.

For Adingra, it’s a chance to reboot his career in a less demanding league. Monaco will hope they can unlock the pace and trickery that has only been seen in flashes in England. For Sunderland, the focus remains squarely on the pitch. Their next test comes against Aston Villa, and the squad must prove that the ambitious project isn’t weakened by one player’s exit.
