Borussia Dortmund defender Almugera Kabar’s proposed loan move to 2. Bundesliga side Hamburg has collapsed at the eleventh hour after a disagreement over the player’s fitness levels during his medical, according to reports.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg revealed the deal, which had been in the works since the start of the January window, fell apart unexpectedly on Wednesday. While stressing the 19 year old left back “did not fail his medical,” Plettenberg noted there were “differing opinions” between the two clubs regarding his physical condition.

It is understood Hamburg were unhappy with the shape in which Kabar arrived. The German born Iraqi youth international has not featured for Dortmund’s first team this season and last played for their reserves in the fourth tier Regionalliga back in December, leading to concerns over his match sharpness.

The breakdown is a significant blow for the player’s development. A move to Hamburg was seen as a crucial chance for regular senior football after attracting considerable interest during the summer window.

With the issues now publicly known, it appears highly unlikely another club will attempt to rush through a last minute deal before the deadline. Kabar, a 2023 FIFA U 17 World Cup winner, is now expected to see out the season in Dortmund, where he faces a battle to regain fitness and break into a congested defensive roster.

For Dortmund, it represents a minor but frustrating administrative hiccup, leaving them with a talented prospect in need of minutes they cannot currently provide.
