The National Sports Commission has heaped praise on the Super Eagles for what they called a “defining” third place finish at AFCON 2025, labelling Nigeria’s bronze medal victory a triumph of character over disappointment.

Nigeria edged out Egypt 4-2 on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw in the playoff, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging the hero after saving two spot kicks, including one from Mohamed Salah.

“More than just a medal” Dikko

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko insisted the bronze means more than just a podium place. “This was a response. A real show of Nigerian spirit,” he said. “After that tough loss in the semis, it would’ve been easy for heads to drop. But this team showed unity, courage and proper maturity. That’s what makes us proud, not just the result, but the manner of it.”

Dikko also claimed the style of play under manager Jose Peseiro had reignited belief. “The football we played brought pride back. It was attractive, it was disciplined, you can see the growth in this squad.”

Olopade praises “mentality monsters”

Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade echoed the sentiment, highlighting the team’s mental strength. “To bounce back and beat a side like Egypt on penalties, that takes serious character. The players and technical crew deserve huge credit. They gave Nigerians hope again.”

Olopade also took time to thank President Bola Tinubu for his “fatherly support and investment” in sports, claiming government backing played a key role in the team’s preparations.

Nwabali the hero, Lookman the ice man

The match itself was a nervy affair with few clear chances, but it exploded in the shootout. Nwabali’s early save from Salah set the tone, and when Ademola Lookman stepped up to slot the winner, he sealed Nigeria’s ninth AFCON bronze in history.

The NSC ended by commending Nigerian fans at home and abroad for their “unwavering support” and reaffirmed a commitment to sustained investment in football development.

What it means

While falling short of the ultimate prize, this bronze medal campaign, built on resilience and marked by a nail biting podium finish, has steadied the ship after the heartbreak of missing the final. With young talents blending with experienced heads, the Super Eagles look to have reclaimed their identity. The challenge now will be turning bronze into gold when AFCON rolls around again.
