Salah vs Mane: AFCON Semis Set for Liverpool Legends’ Rivalry as Egypt and Senegal Clash for Final Spot

The stage is set for a monumental Africa Cup of Nations semi final in Tangiers on Wednesday, as Egyptian king Mohamed Salah and Senegalese hero Sadio Mane former Liverpool title winning teammates face off with a place in the final on the line.

This is the first time the pair have shared a pitch since the 2022 Champions League final, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. For Salah, it’s a desperate quest to finally lift the trophy that has eluded him. For Mane, it’s the chance to edge his old colleague once again and move a step closer to defending Senegal’s crown.

Salah arrives in blistering form, carrying Egypt’s hopes on his shoulders with four goals in the tournament so far. “Nobody, even in Egypt, wants to win this trophy more than me,” the 31 year old admitted after the quarter finals. “This is the title I am waiting for.” His anguish is fresh, having skippered the side beaten by Mane’s Senegal on penalties in the 2022 final, a defeat compounded months later when Salah missed a penalty in a World Cup play off loss to the same opponents, with Mane scoring the winner.

Mane, now with Al Nassr, plays with the freedom of a man who’s already done it. “The pressure for me is over,” he revealed recently. He netted the decisive penalty in that 2022 shoot out, exorcising the ghosts of a saved spot kick in normal time, and delivered Senegal their first ever AFCON. He knows how to get the better of his former teammate when it matters most.

Their club history adds a fascinating layer. For five years under Jurgen Klopp, they formed part of a devastating front three with Roberto Firmino, lifting the Premier League and Champions League. Yet Mane has hinted at an occasionally tense on pitch dynamic, once joking on a podcast about games where he was “really, really angry because he doesn’t pass me the ball.” There’ll be no passing dilemmas tomorrow, only direct opposition.

The broader context is immense. Senegal are chasing a third final in four editions, aiming to build a dynasty. Egypt, the most successful nation in AFCON history, are hunting a record extending eighth title. Both sides have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, offering what may be a last dance on the global stage for these two icons.

For Salah, this feels like a now or never moment to cement his international legacy. For Mane, it’s about reinforcing his. When the whistle blows in Tangiers, it’ll be more than a semi final, it’s a personal duel years in the making, with a continent watching and a final against either Nigeria or Morocco the glittering prize.
