We’re Not Going Home!” – Mozambique Star Kambala Vows to Send Nigeria Packing in AFCON Shock

Manuel Kambala has fired a defiant warning to Nigeria ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations last 16 clash, insisting Mozambique are ready to make history and dump the Super Eagles out.

The Polokwane City midfielder declared the Mambas will not be booking an early flight home, boldly backing his side to cause a major upset in Fès on Monday.

“I believe we will advance, I clearly believe we will advance with the team we have,” Kambala told reporters. “We have already shown that on the field. We are not just here to participate. I believe we will not return to Mozambique on January 5th.”

His confidence flies in the face of history. Nigeria have dominated this fixture, winning four of the five meetings and cruising to a 3-0 victory in their only previous AFCON encounter back in 2010. The Super Eagles have looked formidable in Morocco too, topping their group with a perfect nine points while scoring nine goals.

But Kambala isn’t bothered by the past. Mozambique, in their first ever knockout appearance at this tournament, have already shown a scrappy, resilient edge. Their chaotic 3-2 win over Gabon proved they can fight to the final whistle, and they’ll likely need to do just that against Nigeria’s firepower.

That Nigerian attack, led by Victor Osimhen and supported by the likes of Lookman and Onuachu, is the obvious threat. Yet there’s a sense they’re not quite at full strength. The loss of Cyriel Dessers without him kicking a ball is a blow, and questions linger over a defence that’s looked leaky, conceding four times in the group stages, even against ten man Uganda.

For Mozambique, the equation is simple: survive, scrap, and seize one chance. They’ve got nothing to lose and a nation’s dreams to fulfil. Nigeria, meanwhile, carry the weight of expectation as one of the tournament favourites.

Kambala’s words have set the tone. It’s the historic underdog versus the continental heavyweight. On Monday, we’ll find out if it’s just brave talk or the prelude to one of AFCON’s great shocks.
