Pep Guardiola’s side saw their Premier League charge shudder to a halt on a bitter night on Wearside, held to a toothless 0-0 draw by a dogged Sunderland.

The result leaves City a gaping four points behind leaders Arsenal, who romped to victory 24 hours earlier, and completely wastes the chance to pile pressure on the Gunners at the halfway mark.

In their first outing of 2026, City were laboured, predictable, and utterly devoid of a cutting edge against a Black Cats side who remain unbeaten at home this season. It’s a massive blow to their title credentials and ends an eight match winning run across all competitions.

“We knew it would be like this. They are a strong, organised team here. We had moments but not enough,” a terse Guardiola admitted afterwards. His side managed just two shots in a dismal first half, their joint lowest of the campaign, with Erling Haaland shackled by Nordi Mukiele and the midfield failing to click.

City thought they had an early breakthrough when Bernardo Silva tapped in, but the flag was rightly up for offside. From there, it was a story of frustration. Haaland, starved of service, shot straight at keeper Robin Roefs when he finally found space. Substitute Savinho then missed two gilt edged chances after the break, leading to his immediate hooking by a furious Guardiola.

At the other end, Sunderland will rue missed chances of their own. Brian Brobbey was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma when clean through, and Trai Hume headed over a sitter just before half time. Donnarumma later made two superb late stops to salvage a point City barely deserved.

The draw throws the title initiative firmly to Arsenal and increases the pressure on City’s next fixture: a home game against a Chelsea side in turmoil after sacking Enzo Maresca. Guardiola’s reported move for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo looks more urgent by the minute, given this blunt showing.

With the North East wind biting and their title hopes suddenly looking chilled, this was a night to forget for City. The question now is whether this is a mere stumble, or the start of a costly winter collapse.
