Tonight’s heavyweight clash in Agadir ain’t just about topping the group. For Egypt’s talisman Mohamed Salah, this is personal. As record winners Egypt face South Africa, Salah carries the weight of a nation’s expectations and a point to prove to everyone watching.

The Liverpool star’s AFCON story is one of painful near misses runner up in 2017 and 2021 and his explosive fall out with his club has hung over Egypt’s camp like a cloud. While manager Hossam Hassan insists Salah is “fully focused,” there’s no doubting this tournament has become the 33 year old’s sole mission. A win tonight against Bafana Bafana virtually seals a knockout spot and silences any doubters.

Salah’s already shown his nerve, slotting a late winner against Zimbabwe in the opener. But South Africa represents a proper test. Hugo Broos’s side, fresh from ending a 21 year curse by winning their own first game, are no mugs. They’ve got history here too, having famously knocked Egypt out in the last 16 back in 2019. The head to head record is brutally even: five wins for South Africa, four for Egypt.

For the Pharaohs, it’s simple. Win, and they’re practically through. Another starring role from Salah who captains the side and the narrative shifts from his club future to his international legacy. Egypt are expected to be unchanged, with only a minor doubt over Mohamed Hamdi. Salah will again link up with Omar Marmoush and Trezeguet in what’s a frightening front three on paper.

South Africa, however, will fancy causing an upset. The confidence from Lyle Foster’s winner against Angola is massive in this so called ‘Group of Death’. Broos is likely to stick with the same XI, though Relebohile Mofokeng’s wing spot might be under pressure from Tshepang Moremi. Their skipper and rock, Ronwen Williams, will need to be at his best to keep Salah quiet.

The broader picture is clear for Salah. With chatter of a Saudi move rumbling in the background, success here is about cementing his legend. Egypt’s seven titles is a record, but their last was in 2010. For a player of his stature, that’s too long. Another final, finally lifting that trophy, is the only way to answer the critics.

Tonight in Agadir, it’s more than a football match. It’s a statement. For Egypt’s hopes, and for one man determined to rewrite his own story. A win for Salah and the Pharaohs puts them on the brink of the last 16. A defeat throws the group wide open and heaps the pressure right back on their superstar’s shoulders. Don’t blink.
