Madrid, Spain Goals from captain Koke and super sub Antoine Griezmann fired Atletico Madrid to a hard fought 2-1 victory over Valencia on Saturday, reigniting their La Liga campaign after a recent stumble.

The win at the Metropolitano Stadium lifts Diego Simeone’s fourth placed side to within six points of leaders Barcelona, who play later on Sunday, and provides a crucial response to consecutive league defeats by Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao earlier this month.

A Battle Decided from the Bench

Following a demanding Champions League win at PSV Eindhoven in midweek, Atletico started sluggishly. Valencia, hovering just above the relegation zone in 16th, began brighter and were unlucky not to take the lead when Hugo Duro rattled the crossbar.

The breakthrough came against the run of play. After a chaotic scramble from a corner in the 20th minute, goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala saved an initial effort but could only watch as Koke reacted fastest to slide home the rebound.

Valencia thought they had found an equalizer when Pepelu found the net, but a VAR review ruled it out for a marginal offside against Duro in the build up, a decision that left the visitors frustrated.

Valencia Fightback Thwarted by Griezmann Magic

The visitors’ persistence paid off in the 61st minute. Argentine forward Pablo Barrios misidentified as “Beltran” in some reports, showcased superb footwork on the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful drive that beat a surprised Jan Oblak at his near post.

With the game in the balance, Simeone turned to his bench. The introduction of Antoine Griezmann in the second half proved decisive. The French forward, who had been rested from the start, delivered a moment of pure class to win the game in the 77th minute.

A long, hopeful ball from defender Marc Pubill seemed harmless, but Griezmann brought it under stunning control with his raised left leg, allowed it to bounce, and in one fluid motion lashed a half volley past Agirrezabala for his fifth league goal of the season.

“The team made a big effort in the Champions League, it was hard for us to find our rhythm,” Griezmann told DAZN after the match. “In the end, it was the substitutes who gave that spark and that speed, so that we could win today.”

Atletico’s Alexander Sorloth had a late goal chalked off for offside, but Valencia offered little in response to Griezmann’s winner, allowing the hosts to see out the game and secure three vital points.

The Broader Liga Landscape

The result shifts pressure back onto Atletico’s rivals at the top. Later on Sunday, Barcelona can extend their lead at the summit when they host Osasuna. On Sunday, the focus turns to the chasing pack:

Second placed Real Madrid face a tricky visit to Alaves, with reports swirling about mounting pressure on coach Xabi Alonso.

Third place Villarreal travel to local rivals Levante in a key battle for European places.

For Simeone’s Atletico, this battling performance was a clear statement of resilience. Having recovered their momentum, they remain firmly in the title conversation as La Liga approaches its hectic winter schedule.
