Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has a welcome selection headache after Christantus Uche announced himself with a goalscoring full debut in the 3-0 Conference League rout of Shelbourne. The Nigerian, thrust into an unfamiliar striker’s role, seized his chance and now looks ready to push for a Premier League start.

Uche, who arrived from Getafe on deadline day, was handed his first start in place of Jean Philippe Mateta and led the line alongside Yéremy Pino and Eddie Nketiah. More than just filling a shirt, he capped a lively performance with a well taken goal, offering Glasner a fresh and potent option up top.

The Palace manager was quick to single out the 24 year old for praise after the match. “Justin (Devenny) played the first time as an inverted right wingback, did well,” Glasner said. “And also in the attack, Uche started his first game as a striker and did well, of course scoring a goal. We could manage all the minutes and, of course, celebrate a big win.”

His impact comes at a crucial time for the Eagles. With a demanding fixture list ahead, Uche’s availability is a major boost after he was omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. While a disappointment for the player, it means Glasner retains a versatile option during a packed schedule.

Until now, Uche’s league involvement has been fleeting just five substitute appearances totalling 44 minutes from Palace’s 12 Premier League games. But his commanding display against Shelbourne suggests that bit part role could be about to change. He’s shown he can adapt and deliver in a new position, giving Glasner food for thought as they prepare for a massive Premier League meeting with Manchester City at Selhurst Park.

The broader picture looks brighter for Palace. Finding a reliable goal threat beyond Mateta has been a season long puzzle, and in Uche, they might just have uncovered an unexpected piece of the solution. If he can translate that Conference League form to the domestic stage, he could become a key figure in Palace’s push up the table.
