Ademola Lookman stands on the brink of Atalanta history as Fiorentina arrive at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday. The Nigerian international, who opened the scoring in Atalanta’s impressive 3–0 Champions League win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday, now sits on 54 goals for the club, a tally that places him joint ninth in Atalanta’s all time charts alongside former Danish forward Poul Rasmussen.

Though Lookman has needed more appearances to reach the total 130 to Rasmussen’s 106, his upward trajectory remains undeniable. Only eight players in the club’s history have scored more. A brace this weekend would lift him to 56 goals, drawing level with Adriano Bassetto and former Napoli striker Germán Denis, two of the most imposing figures in Atalanta’s attacking lineage.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, have long been one of Lookman’s preferred opponents. With five goals and three assists in seven meetings, the Viola are the side he has punished most consistently. With both teams desperate for league points, another decisive display from the Nigerian forward would surprise no one.

Atalanta seek domestic lift off as Fiorentina sink deeper into crisis

Despite their European exploits, Atalanta’s Serie A campaign remains mired in frustration. Wednesday’s commanding win in Frankfurt sealed in a five minute second half burst eased some of the strain on new manager Raffaele Palladino. Yet La Dea sit just 10th in their Champions League group standings and remain well off the pace domestically, having collected only 13 points from 12 matches their worst start since 2014.

Winless in eight league outings under Palladino and former boss Ivan Jurić, Atalanta have not celebrated a Serie A victory since September. Last weekend’s 3–1 defeat to champions Napoli deepened the malaise and heightened the urgency for a turnaround.

Fiorentina’s situation, however, is even more alarming. Without a league win since May, the Tuscan side lie 17th after a 1–1 draw with Juventus. New coach Paolo Vanoli has yet to arrest the slide, overseeing two league draws and a Conference League defeat to AEK Athens in which his side managed just two shots on target.

Problems stretch across the pitch: 10 goals conceded from set pieces, misfiring strikers in Moise Kean and Edin Džeko, and a seven-game winless streak. Injuries to Robin Gosens, Christian Kouamé and Tariq Lamptey plus doubts over Dodô ,further complicate Vanoli’s task.

With Atalanta expected to maintain their attacking trio and Lookman in sharp form, Fiorentina face another daunting evening in Bergamo. And should Lookman strike again, the record books may well tilt decisively in his favour.
