TÓRSHAVN, Faroe Islands – The Faroe Islands moved into third place in their World Cup qualifying group with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gibraltar on Tuesday, securing their second win in three matches and keeping their slim qualification hopes alive.

The decisive moment arrived in the 68th minute when substitute Martin Agnarsson fired a clinical finish across goal from close range, breaking the deadlock in a match characterized by limited chances and determined defending from both sides.

Gibraltar had started the second half brightly, forcing Faroes goalkeeper Mattias Lamhauge into two sharp saves from Graeme Torrilla and Julian Del Rio within minutes of the restart. However, the home side grew into the game as the half progressed, with Jóan Símun Edmundsson testing Bradley Banda before Agnarsson’s winner.

The victory moves the Faroe Islands to six points in Group L, though they remain nine points behind group leaders Croatia and face a significant challenge to secure a playoff spot. For Gibraltar, the defeat extends their winless run in qualifying and leaves them bottom of the group without a point from five matches.

While qualification for the 2026 World Cup remains a distant prospect for both nations, the result represents another milestone for the Faroe Islands’ continued development in international football, building on recent competitive victories against similarly ranked opponents.
